Asheville Aces News Release
The Asheville Aces defeated the red hot Fayetteville Fire Ants 6-1 in front of a crowd of 3,412 at the Civic Center Saturday night, to keep them within 8 points of the final playoff spot in the SPHL standings.
The Aces, who were looking to bounce back from a poor effort Friday night versus Macon, set the tone for the early with Peter Bournazakis scoring just over a minute into the first period. The game-wining goal was scored by Jarno Mensonen followed by another goal from Joel Petkoff. Chad Peck scored the Fire Ants only goal of the night in the first.
The Aces continued to add points to the board with goals from Eldon Cheechoo, Peter Bournazakis, and Brett Roat in the second period. Both teams were hitting heavy and wracked up 83 total penalty minutes including a game misconduct for Fayettville's Mike Fournier.
Asheville played a very sound defensive third period frustrating the Fire Antz with a sustained fore check and forcing them to dump the puck in to the Aces zone. The frustration seemed to come to a head late in the third as Fayetteville took several slashing penalties, putting the Aces on a 5 on 3 powerplay to finish the game.
The Aces are fighting hard for the final spot in the playoffs and will be looking to take down the Jacksonville Barracudas on Thursday, February 17. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Asheville Civic Center. For tickets, visit the Civic Center Box Office or call Ticketmaster at (828) 251-5505.
