Asheville Aces News Release
- Janis Tomans five point night, including the first hat trick in Aces history as the Asheville Aces feasted on the Winston-Salem Polar Twins by the score of 11-1 in front of a crowd of 1,755. With the Aces victory, Asheville moves into sole possession of first place in the Southern Professional Hockey League.
Chris Ferguson got the Aces on the board early in the first period at 1:45. The scored stayed that way as it looked as this may have been another tight hockey game, or so it seems. Whatever was said in the locker room between the 1st and 2nd period must have triggered lightening in a bottle as the Aces came out flying. Peter Cermak scored at 1:46 to put Asheville up 2-0. Janis Tomans added the first of three on the night at 8:36. Winston-Salem's Richard Gustafsson closed the gap at 10:06 to make the score 3-1. From that point on, it was all Asheville. Asheville scored a pair to close out the second. In the third period, the Aces scored six goals, a season high, as Tomans completed his hat trick, followed by Dan Pszensczny's second goal of the night. The Aces dominated the period as the team outshoot the Polar-Twins 25-4, for a total of 60 shots on goal.
Mark Scally put in another fine performance as he stopped 31 of 32 shots. In the middle of the second period, Scaly put on a clinic as he stopped several Winston-Salem shots when it looked like the Polar Twins were gaining some life in attempt to close the gap.
The Aces broke season highs in four categories and one player tied a season high mark. Joel Petkoff's 10 shots tied two other players in the league (Fayetteville's Steve Zoryk and Macon's Steve Roberts) for most shots in one game. Janis Tomans +6 is a league high, shattering the old mark of +4 held by 4 other players. The Aces 25 shots in the 3rd period is a new season high as well as 60 shots in a game, the most by any team in one game. The Aces six goals were the most in any period by any team this season. The Aces take to the road to face the Knoxville Ice Bears tomorrow night, then return home on Friday to take on Fayetteville at the Civic Center. Face-off is at 7:30.
