Aces Bullpen Keys Series Sweep

August 28, 2007 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Alexandria, LA - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (0-4) took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth, but couldn't score again as the Alexandria Aces (3-0) scored in every inning from the fourth on to win 7-4 and complete a four game United League Championship Series sweep tonight at Bringhurst Field. It is the second-straight United League Championship for the Aces.

The Aces scored first for the fourth-straight game as Tyrone Pendergrass led off the game with a double against Julian Williams. After a Richard Paz sacrifice bunt, Selwyn Langaigne lined a 3-0 pitch into center field for an RBI-single to make it 1-0.

Sam McLain may have saved the WhiteWings series in the second inning when Langaigne came up with the bases loaded and two outs. He hit a fly ball to deep left field that sent McLain back to the wall where he lept up and took a double away to end the inning.

The WhiteWings took the lead in the top of the fourth against Pedro Flores as Omar Bramasco led off with a walk and Miguel Peguero reached on an infield single. Ryan Fox caught the Aces by surprise by pushing a bunt to the right side, allowing him to pick up his first hit of the season to load the bases for Luany Sanchez who hit an RBI-single. Then, with Brian Nichols batting, Flores threw a wild pitch to send Peguero home and move everybody up. Nichols ended up reaching on a fielder's choice on which no outs were recorded, setting up Kevin Griffin's sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

Bryan Sabatella responded with a solo home run in the fourth to make it 3-2.

In the fifth, John Beal led off with a single and Bub Bergstrom followed with his first hit of the series, an RBI-double, to make it 4-2.

Even with the extra offense, Williams could not escape the fifth. After a two-out four-pitch walk to Josh Tranum, scheduled game five starter Joe Rogers came out of the bullpen to try to finish the inning. He ended up walking Palmer Karr Jr. and Luis Guance on ten pitches to load the bases for Sabatella. Bobby Darling (0-1) came and got Sabatella to hit a grounder to short, but it ended up being an RBI-infield single. Then, with Evan Cherry batting, Darling threw a wild pitch to tie the game 4-4.

The Aces took the lead on a wild pitch in the sixth as Pendergrass hit a one-out double and stole third. With Richard Paz at the plate, Darling threw the ball to the backstop to give the Aces a 5-4 lead.

The Aces tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Karr got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He tried to steal second and Griffin's throw was in time, but Bramasco dropped the ball. Two batters later, Cherry hit an RBI-single to make it 6-4.

Not even Derek Bennett could stop the Aces from scoring, as Pendergrass drew a nine-pitch leadoff walk in the eighth, stole second, and one batter Langaigne hit an RBI-single to make it 7-4.

Juan Carlos Ovalles (1-0) pitched two and two-thirds innings for the win, walking one and striking out four.

Justin Dowdy struck out two in a scoreless ninth for his second save of the series.
