Alexandria Aces News Release
ALEXANDRIA- Ryan Gasporra and Nick Mahin both hit home runs to highlight an 8-run third inning that gave the Alexandria Aces a 10-6 victory against the San Angelo Colts Sunday night at Bringhurst Field.
After Austin Newell put the Aces (4-6) up 2-0 with a 2-run single in the first inning off Colts (6-4) starter Derek Christensen, the Aces put the game away in the third off the righthander.
First Mahin touched Christensen (0-1) for a walk and Newell doubled him in to make the score 3-0.
An out later, Gasporra hit his first pro home run to right field, and Michael Haynes followed later in the inning with a 2-run double down the third base line to chase Christensen. Mahin then followed with a 3-run homer, his second of the season, off the scoreboard in left center to give the Aces a 10-0 early lead.
Aces manager Von Hayes had flip flopped Mahin and Newell in the lineup prior to the game.
"I think it [helped]. It got Newell in a better frame of mind and got Mahin better pitches to hit," Hayes said.
Meanwhile Jon Jones won his second game by keeping the Colts off the board for five innings before being touched by a 2-run double by Chris Caves and a run scoring single by Oscar Garcia. The lefthander allowed six hits and three walks while striking out five in 5 2/3 innings.
The Colts' Braden Embry hit a 2-run home run in the eighth inning off Alex Schmarzo Fort Worth's David Bergin for the league lead.
The Aces and Colts play the third game of their four game series Monday night at 7:05. Alexandria's Jadd Schmetzer pitches against fellow righthander Corey Frerichs.
