Alaska Aces News Release
The defending Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces will face the third-seeded Las Vegas Wranglers in the Western Conference Finals, the ECHL has announced. Due to building conflicts in both cities, the Aces and Wranglers will play an unconventional 2-4-1 format in the best-of-seven series. The Western Conference Finals will begin this Thursday and Friday night in Las Vegas for two games, before moving to Anchorage for the next four games. If a Game 7 is necessary, it would be played in Las Vegas. The Aces first home game of the series will be Game 3 on Sunday, April 29 at 7:15pm AKT at Sullivan Arena. Individual Aces playoff tickets for the Conference Finals will go on sale at 9am on Tuesday morning. Tickets can be purchased at the Aces office, the Sullivan Arena Box Office, Fred Meyer Stores, or online at www.ticketmaster.com. The top-seeded Aces received an opening-round bye and then advanced to their sixth Conference Final in franchise history with a five-game series victory over the Stockton Thunder. The Wranglers swept through the opening round against the Utah Grizzlies and then advanced to their third ever Conference Final with a five-game series victory over the Idaho Steelheads, concluding Sunday night with a 2-1 overtime win.
This will be the fourth all-time postseason meeting between the Aces and Wranglers, and their second in the Conference Finals. Alaska has won two of the prior three series. In 2009 the Aces swept through the Wranglers in the Conference Finals to reach the Kelly Cup Finals. In 2008 Las Vegas earned a five-game series victory in the Conference Semifinals. The first ever postseason matchup between the clubs came in 2006 when the Aces ousted the Wranglers in six games in the Division Finals en route to their first ever Kelly Cup Championship.
This season the clubs had an evenly played regular season series. Alaska went 4-3-2 in nine games against Las Vegas, with the Wranglers posting a 5-3-1 record in those games. Three of the nine games went to overtime. The Aces were 3-0-2 at home and 1-3 in Las Vegas.
The winner will advance to the 2012 Kelly Cup Finals where they will face either the Kalamazoo Wings or the Florida Everblades.
