Aces advance to championship

August 20, 2008 - United League Baseball (ULB) - Alexandria Aces News Release

San Angelo, Texas - August 20, 2008 - The Alexandria Aces clinched a berth into the championship round of the United League Playoffs as they won Game 3 Wednesday over the San Angelo Colts 5-3 at Foster Field. The Aces survived a scare in the bottom of the ninth. After Aces closer Juan Carlos Ovalles got pinch hitter Albert Gonzalez to pop out to short, he got Tyrone Pendergrass to ground out to second to bring the Aces within one out of clinching the series. John Anderson hit a bloop single to left, and Jose Torres walked to bring up the Colts' best hitter, Andres Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who led the league in home runs with 21, had homered earlier in the game. On a 2-1 pitch, Rodriguez hit a high, fly ball down the left-field line that just curved foul to keep the Colts from winning on a walk-off home run. Three pitches later, on a full count, Juan Carlos Ovalles got Rodriguez to fly out to left to end the game. The Aces got out on top early when Homy Ovalles hit a solo homer to left to lead-off the third inning. Alexandria got another solo homer from Andre Marshall, his second of the series, in the fourth. Aces starter Alexis Sosa put the Aces in a position to win with a great outing. The left-hander went 6.2 innings and he struck out six in the win. On the other side of the bracket, the Amarillo Dillas finished off a sweep of the Edinburg Coyotes with a 5-4 win Wednesday. The Aces will travel to Amarillo to face the Dillas in a three-game series for the United League Championship. The Aces will start their run for their third-straight championship Thursday at 7:05.
