El Paso Generals News Release
ABILENE, TX. : The Abilene Ruff Riders picked up a big win on Saturday, May 23 defeating Lone Star Division front-runner El Paso by the score of 45-35. Abilene stormed out to an early lead in the ball game. QB Quincy Carter hooked up with WR Juan Reese for a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0. DB Darvin Peterson then recorded a rouge, extending Abilene's lead to 8-0.
In the second quarter, Abilene once again got on the score board as Quincy Carter ran in a one-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 following a blocked extra point attempt. Following a Trey Crum field goal, El Paso closed the gap as RB Ulysses Odom caught a four-yard touchdown pass from QB Tommy Jones to make it 14-9. However, the Ruff Riders found the end-zone once again as Quincy Carter hooked up with WR Juan Reese for a 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-9 at halftime.
Abilene began the second half just like the first as Quincy Carter hit WR Fred Howze for a 20-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-9 following the extra point. El Paso would work back into the ball game as RB Ulysses Odom caught not one but two touchdown passes from Tommy Jones in the third quarter, one for 20 yards and the other for 18. However, Abilene countered with a big 49-yard touchdown pass from Quincy Carter to Howze to make it 35-23, Abilene leading at the end of the third quarter.
A scarey situation for the Ruff Riders as Quincy Carter left the ball game at the beginning of the fourth quarter due to an injury. Abilene turned to David Bowie to take over at quarterback. Bowie did not disappoint as he completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Fred Howze to extend Abilene's lead at 42-23. El Paso came storming back in the fourth as Tommy Jones registered two touchdown passes to WR Lemans Casimier to cut the Abilene lead to 42-35. Abilene added a late field goal as the defense was able to hold off the Generals offense and seal the win at 45-35.
QB Tommy Jones threw for 188 yards and five touchdown passes as Ulysses Odom caught seven passes for 72 yards and three touchdowns. Quincy Carter finished with 187 yards passing and four touchdowns and WR Fred Howze led all Ruff Riders receivers with five catches for 94 yards and three touchdowns.
Abilene (5-3) remains at home for another week to play host to the Corpus Christi Hammerheads on Saturday, May 30 from the Taylor County Expo Center. El Paso (5-2) returns home to face San Angelo in the first of consecutive meetings from the El Paso County Coliseum.
