May 25, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Memorial Day weekend has come and gone and indoor football begins the limp down the home stretch.
The money is running out. The teams that are good are scheming to figure out how to make money to cover the playoffs, and the teams that aren't good just want to get through the end of the season. And from what I've picked up, the silly season of league jumping is already off to a head start.
So let's run down the fun, league-by-league.
IFL
OFF FIELD: It's very, very quiet, but has anyone noticed that Executive Director Gary Tufford isn't on the staff list anymore. Did he quit, and if so, why? Tuff kept my old WIFL from self-imploding mid-season, what was the deal here?
ON THE FIELD:Â Three out of the four divisions have pretty good battles going. Sioux Falls is only half a game out of the playoffs. And, I know all the people on the boards are loving this, Rochester's under .500 at the halfway point. Karma's a tough cookie, isn't she?
CIFL
OFF THE FIELD:Â They figured out a way to keep the Ft. Wayne Freedom playing a couple of more weeks. Isn't it sort of obvious by now that a team in this market is just an invitation to burn money?
ON THE FIELD: Chicago Slaughter. 2009 Indoor Football Team of The Year. âNuff said.
SIFL
OFF THE FIELD: In its haste to put together a league quickly, the league now probably regrets letting the Florida Kings and Texas Pirates take the field. Â If you kick out a team that's an easy victory, something has gotta be wrong with them. I mean let's be real, if teams could be kicked out of a league for being bad, the Detroit Lions would have been done long ago. And even if there was a gross injustice, Texas had no business walking off the field. At least the SIFL's addressing both problems and giving us message boarders more stuff to post about it.
ON THE FIELD: Austin's 4-1 and beat Louisiana. Acadiana's 3-1. Should be an interesting battle the rest of the way.
AIFA
OFF THE FIELD: This is also quiet, but that guy named "Sources" has reared his ugly head and said the Florence Phantoms are falling apart. This was the AIFA's best franchise last year. He has said that for a few years now, so we can just stay in wait and see mode there. Out West, AIFA co-owner Michael Mink decided to do some trash talk sparring with the Wyoming Cavalry. Wyoming responded with a 52-point road spanking against Mink's team. Nice. At least Ogden has New Mexico to kick around.
ON THE FIELD: Wyoming and Utah Valley have a great series going on in the west. Columbus-Fayetteville is shaping out in the South. And I'm actually pulling for Erie to win five straight along with Harrisburg, on top of Baltimore choking to allow the River Rats to sneak in to the playoffs. You never know.
