ABA to experiment with developmental league
May 24, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it would experiment with a summertime developmental league initiating a new chapter in the unique professional basketball league's growth.
Earlier this summer, the ABA announced "The ABA Xperience," its first Summer Pro League in Los Angeles, California. According to Newman, "The American Basketball Developmental League (ABDL) is a different model completely, structured like the Chicago Pro-Am as an example."
Working closely with Dr. Morris Britton, owner of the ABA Mississippi Stingers, who will organize and administer the program on an experimental basis in Greenville, Mississippi in June, the ABDL will give basketball players from throughout the Southeast an opportunity to play in an organized league, using ABA rules, the red, white and blue ABA ball and to be exposed to top flight coaching. Britton anticipates having NBA, ABA and international scouts on hand regularly to evaluate players. According to Dr. Britton, "The objective of the league is to help develop players, to keep them in good physical condition for the fall season, and to provide the ABA with additional exposure during the summer months. Obviously, if this first model works this summer, we hope to have similar ABDL summer leagues in other parts of the country."
Britton added, "As a Thank You to Stingers fans, all ABDL summer league games will be free of charge and open to the public. Special drawings will be held each game for tickets for the Stingers 2005-2006 season. Hopefully the ABDL will enhance our presence in the Greenville community during the off season. We applaud the ABA's efforts to give us an opportunity to participate in this newest venue."
For more information how you can participate in the ABDL, email Dr. Britton at jadvocat@aol.com, or call James Britton, ABDL Director, at 262 332 0422.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
