ABA announces salute

October 25, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) is pleased to announce an exciting new program designed to benefit members of our armed forces and their families. The program is called SALUTE. The objective of the program is to raise funds through the sale of SALUTE branded merchandise and other means to create scholarships and financial aid for servicemembers and their families. This is the ABA's way of thanking those who serve our nation and protect our freedom.

According to Joe Newman, ABA CEO, "An attractive new line of SALUTE merchandise is available on-line and will be available aslo at ABA games. When you purchase SALUTE merchandise, a percentage of the proceeds will be used for scholarships and financial aid. In addition, the ABA will have other fundraising activities to further increase the revenues to be used for the program. We are also reaching out to America's colleges, proprietary and vocational schools to donate full and partial scholarships for this program."

Jennifer Hester, ABA Salute Coordinator added, "We want the SALUTE logo to become as easily recognizable as the Nike or Polo logos because each time a t-shirt, golf shirt, hat or other merchandise is purchased, it will put more money into the Salute Scholarship Fund. We also hope that when you see a serviceman or woman, you'll take the time to say "Thank You" and give him or her a "salute."

Mrs. Hester is the wife of active duty U.S. Marine Master Sergeant Todd Hester. "We know the hardships and sacrifices the military family endures," she stated. "Todd has been active duty for 19 years and has served most of this time in the Fleet Marine Force, being deployed all over the world. With a daughter in college, Todd and I understand the financial strain placed on families and know how expensive this endeavor can be. We also know that many in our military are retiring or honorably discharged and that additional skills training may be needed. Our hope is to ease some of the financial burden of these gallant people who may need financial assistance for college, vocational or proprietary schools."
