Minot Minotauros News Release
by Ken Oda
Aberdeen, SD - The Minotauros bounced back from a bad weekend against the Bismarck Bobcats with a road split against the defending Robertson Cup Champion Aberdeen Wings. The Tauros were just one bad period away from sweeping the Wings on the weekend. The spilt sets up a showdown on the Pepsi Rink at Maysa Arena on Monday.
On Friday the Tauros got off to a strong start taking a 2-0 lead. Joseph Harguindeguy scored off of hard work on the forecheck by Jay Buchholz to open the scoring just 1:47 in. Buchholz then got a goal of his own to give the Tauros a 2-0 lead with 1:54 left in the first. The lead would not last the period however after Cade Neilson scored off of a turnover at the Tauro blue line and then Jake Beaune scored a power play goal with just two seconds left in the period.
Kyler Kleven scored midway through the second to restore the Tauro lead but Clayton Cosentino tied the game at three five minutes later. The wheels came off in the third period for the Tauros however getting outshot 17-6 and outscored 3-0 to fall 6-3.
Saturday night the games started similarly to the night before. The Tauros swarmed the Wings but did not break through until Hunter Bjorge's dump in handcuffed Aberdeen goaltender Henry Welsch and he played it into his own goal. The 1-0 lead held into the second period when Dan Russell got behind the Wings' defense for a breakaway goal to give the Tauros a 2-0 lead. Cole O'Connell then extended the lead to 3-0 when he tipped a Jack Westlund pass from behind the net past Welsch. The Wings would try to storm back scoring twice in the second period but they could not get the equalizer past A.J. Ruskowski who stopped 30 shots in the win.
The teams will not get much rest as they meet in Minot on Monday for the Tauros annual Veterans Day game. The first 1,000 fans with military ID will get in for free at will call thanks to Qdoba.
