A Wild Night in Sioux City Ends in a Loss

May 30, 2006 - American Association (AA)
St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

Sioux City, IA-The Blacksnakes and Sioux City engaged in a wild affair that the Explorers won 8-4 to close the four-game series. St. Joe (5-12) jumped to a 4-0 lead but could not hold on as Sioux City (9-8) came back in a game that included four ejections-three stemming from a benches clearing incident in the top of the third.

With a man at second, an 0-2 fastball from Sioux City's Kieran Mattison hit Wil Quintana in the helmet. Quintana started towards the mound exchanging words with Mattison before catcher Mike Richardson tackled Quintana from behind and both benches emptied. Mattison, Richardson and Quintana were all ejected from the incident.

St. Joe had taken the lead in the top of the first when Quintana singled in Mojica for a 1-0 lead. They extended it to 2-nothing during the eventful third on Mark Burke's sacrifice fly.

The lead grew to 4-0 on consecutive two-out run-scoring hits by Bryan Mulhern and Scooter Jordan in the fourth.

But Sioux City would close to 4-3 on home runs by Chris Grossman and Jorge Moreno in the fifth and sixth. But in the seventh, the Explorers struck for five runs against the 'Snakes bullpen to take the lead.

The loss was the team's sixth in a row, and tenth in a row away from home.

Scooter Jordan and Jimmy Mojica each had a couple hits to lead the offense. Jordan has reached safely in all 15 games he's played and Mojica continued his streak of hitting safely in all 11 games.

The 'Snakes now head home for a three-game series with the division-leading Lincoln Saltdogs. Game time is 7:05pm on Tuesday night at Phil Welch Stadium. Josh Jarman (0-1) will start the opener for St. Joe. Our broadcast begins at 6:45pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show on www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
