Canaries explode for ninth inning win

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Fall Canaries (5-12) exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 tie and take a 7-3 win against the Sioux City Explorers (9-9). Canaries left fielder Abner Arroyo went 5-for-5 in the game with an RBI and a run scored.

The Explorers got on the board first, in the bottom of the second inning. Jorge Moreno led off with a double and scored on a single by Jason Carlson to give Sioux City a 1-0 advantage.

Sioux City added to their lead in the third inning. Dan Meier walked with two outs and Kevin Henry doubled Meier home for a 2-0 lead.

The Canaries tied the game in the sixth inning. Edgard Clemente drew a one-out walk. Abner Arroyo followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Clemente scored on Justin Schuda's groundout to second base and Arroyo scored on Dennis Anderson's infield single, tying the game, 2-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Explorers retook the lead. Jorge Mendoza led off the inning with a home run, his American Association leading sixth home run of the season. The long ball gave Sioux City a 3-2 lead.

The game was again tied in the seventh inning. David Hoffman doubled with one out. Hoffman advanced to third on a groundout by Ralph Santana and scored on an infield single by Chad Hermansen, knotting the game 3-3.

The Canaries pulled ahead in the ninth. Hoffman got on with a leadoff walk and Santana replaced him on first base after grounding into a fielder's choicer. Santana stole second base for his league leading fifteenth steal of the year. Santana then took third on a throwing error by catcher Chris Grossman. Hermansen doubled to score Santana for a 4-3 lead. Arroyo singled for his fifth hit of the night, scoring Hermansen to put the Canaries ahead 5-3. Justin Schuda followed with a double to score Arroyo make it 6-3. Dennis Anderson doubled to score Schuda for the 7-3 final.

Aaron Garrison (1-0) pitched 2.1 innings in relief allowing no runs on one hit and one walk while striking out the side in the eighth inning. Sean Kramer (0-1) suffered the loss for the Explorers.
