Plymouth Whalers News Release
PLYMOUTH, MI - Led by veterans Bobby Mignardi and Marcus Carroll, the Owen Sound Attack led from start to finish in a 6-2 victory over the Plymouth Whalers in an Ontario Hockey League game played Friday night before 2,081 at Compuware Arena.
Plymouth is now 9-6-0-0. Owen Sound is 6-10-1-2.
Carroll was the game's first star with a goal (11th of the year) and three assists. Mignardi added two goals (team-leading 13-14), while Michael Halmo (first), Jesse Blacker (second) and Jason Wilson (fourth) scored single goals for Owen Sound. Ryan Hayes (first of the season in first game of the year) and Tyler Seguin (team-leading 18th) scored for Plymouth.
Owen Sound won last night, 5-4 in a shootout, last night in Windsor and raced to a 3-0 lead against the Whalers tonight in the first period. Carroll (snap shot from the slot on a power play at 2:10) and a pair from Mignardi (rebound in front of the Plymouth goal at 10:46, loose puck on the left wing side of the Plymouth goal at 15:31).
"We wanted to come out hard in the first period, because they played against Windsor last night," said Plymouth's Myles McCauley. "We need to get more pucks to the net and shoot from all angles."
Halmo gave Owen Sound a 4-0 lead at 0:45 of the second period, tapping home a rebound on the left wing side of the Plymouth goal past Whalers starting goaltender Matt Hackett. At that point, Plymouth head coach Mike Vellucci pulled Hackett in favor of Scott Wedgewood.
Plymouth mounted a comeback with a pair of goals of their own in the second period to cut the Owen Sound lead to 4-2. Hayes - playing in his first game of the year after retuning from an injury - scored on a scramble at the left wing side of the Attack goal at 4:18 and Seguin deflected McCauley's low shot from the right point at 6:50.
"We played a lot better as a team in the second period, "Hayes said. "We came out flat in the first. (On his goal) my linemates went crashing to the net and the puck popped out to me. So I had an empty net and it was pretty easy for me."
But that was close as Plymouth got all night as Owen Sound scored the only two goals of the third period. Blacker scored on a partial breakaway at 9:05 and Wilson tucked a high slot from the left wing over the shoulder of Wedgewood at 13:42.
Owen Sound outshot Plymouth, 36-31, in the game.
Plymouth plays in Erie on Saturday night and Brampton Sunday afternoon before returning home next Friday against Sarnia at 7:05pm.
