A Look Back In Time: The 2005 Surf Dawgs

April 24, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

The Dawgs (52-38) did it behind stellar performances from people like pitcher Adam Johnson who was 8-1 with a 2.58 ERA before having his contract purchased by the Oakland Athletics. Seth Pietsch and Scott Goodman will be returning to their respective positions in 2006 for the Surf Dawgs. Last season Pietsch and Goodman both smacked 12 home runs and Pietsch led the team with a .323 batting average; good for ninth in the GBL. Goodman was the only Dawg to reach the 100-hit plateau last season and he also led the team in RBI's with 69.

Another piece to last year's puzzle was future Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson. Henderson, to no surprise, led the Surf Dawgs with 16 stolen bases last season and also led the team in walks with 73. Henderson also chipped in a .270 batting average, 5 home runs and a near flawless effort in the field only making two errors all season long in the outfield.

Third-sacker Nick Guerra, a local product of the San Diego area, had a fine 2005 rookie season which earned him the Golden Baseball League Rookie of the Year award. Guerra batted .290 and crushed seven home runs last season while playing at the hot corner. Guerra will return for the 2006 season and once again play third base.

Three other players who had big impacts last were Tony Garcia, Matt Wheatland and Aaron Wilson. Garcia led the GBL in fielding percentage at the shortstop position in 2005 and will be back to pick up right where he left off last season. Matt Wheatland also returns to the Dawgs in 2006 to anchor the infield. Wheatland hit .266 and slugged six home runs last season while playing in 67 games. Starter Aaron Wilson led the club in strikeouts last season with 94 and also posted a 7-3 record with a 3.58 ERA. Wilson will return to anchor the Dawg staff in 2006.
