Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, CA: The Fullerton Flyers announced Monday that two local media, one from the music industry, and one from the world of sports, signed one-day contracts to play during the upcoming 2006 season. The inaugural tryout drew 19 players from all walks of life, including rock and roll, sports, news, television, and the big screen. Even a 48 year old City of Fullerton employee made his way onto the field and nearly made the cut!
World Famous KROQ 106.7 DJ Ted Stryker sparkled during the tryout, making several excellent defensive plays at third base, and drilled several line drives into the gaps during the batting practice and scrimmage portions of the afternoon.
"I got to hit off of Garry Templeton!", remarked the ear-to-ear grinning Stryker. "I even hit a few rockets off of him. Not too many people I know can say that!" Stryker commented in his afternoon drive time show on Monday about how much fun he had, and how sore he is from the workout. "They worked our [butts] off out there, but it was an absolute thrill of a lifetime", he told his listeners.
"He has a great swing, and it is obvious that he knows the game, and has played competitively in his youth", commented Flyers Skipper Templeton. "He has a lot of enthusiasm and knowledge about the game, and the guys (the Flyers team) will love having him around when he comes out."
FoxSports.com Writer and Editor Gerritt Ritt also dazzled the Flyers coaches and front office team. Ritt played solid defense in the outfield, ran for speed, and hit for power in the tryout.
"He made highlight-reel diving catch in centerfield during the scrimmage", said Flyers Hitting Coach Jerry Turner, who played 8 years of centerfield at the Big League level. "That is when he sold me!"
"This was a lifelong dream of mine", Ritt said. "To try out for a professional baseball team - and to think I actually made the cut! Wow!"
Stryker and Ritt will each come out at some point during the Flyers season (dates TBD) and will suit up with the team in the clubhouse, take batting practice, and perhaps get a chance to play, depending on the circumstances of the game. "That is entirely at Tempy's (Templeton) discretion, just as it is with all other players on the roster", stated Flyers GM Ed Hart. "Hopefully we can complete the dream for both of them and get them into some real game action."
One of the highlights of the day was when vocalist and guitarist Matty Lewis from the band Zebrahead pitched to several hitters in the scrimmage. Lewis, who had not pitched to live hitting in over 5 years, was very effective.
"He is my guy!", Flyers Pitching Coach Charlie Hough exclaimed. "He was the only pitcher trying out for the team today, and he threw strikes - with a good deal of velocity."
"I tried to get Charlie to teach me the knuckler," Lewis said. "But he liked my cheese (fastball) and deuce (curveball), so we stayed with that!"
Other notables trying out for the team on Saturday included 4 members of the band The Aquabats, Carlos Alazraqui from the upcoming feature movie "Reno 911: Miami", sports Executive Producers Dave Singer (ESPN Radio) and Greg Toohey (Fox Sports Radio). KIIS FM was also represented by Chris Martinez and Mike Vasquez. Orange City Councilman Steven Ambriz and US Army Station Commander Gilberto Maldonado gave their all to make the team, as well!
