
\'Gators Lose By One At Home To Pensacola

LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators (9-35) returned to the Dome on Friday night to fight cancer and the Pensacola Ice Flyers (24-15). The âGators took to the ice wearing pink jerseys that were auctioned off after the game to raise money to benefit Miles Perret Cancer Services. However the IceGators were unable to win, falling to the Ice Flyers 4-3.
The âGators fell behind early in the first period. The newest goalkeeper for the IceGators, Mike Brown, allowed the Ice Flyers to score 30 seconds into the game scored by Tanner Shultz (PEN). Between 15:59 and 12:53 the IceGators offense put pressure on the Pensacola defense. The âGators had six unanswered shots on goal but was unable to push the puck past Peter Hirsch, Pensacola goalkeeper. With 11:34, remaining in the period Chris Wilson (PEN) scored his 30th goal of the season and first goal of the night. Louisiana was able to cut the lead in half just before the end of the period. Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn (LOU) scored his second goal since joining the IceGators with help from C.J. Tozzo (LOU).
The second period began with the Ice Flyers' Evan Schafer being called for tripping and 30 seconds later Kyle Dorowicz (PEN) was called for slashing. This put the IceGators on a 2-man advantage but the âGators were able to capitalize on either penalty. Shortly after the power plays ended, Wilson scored his second goal of the game with 16:13 left in the period. Less than six minutes later the âGators cut the Ice Flyers' lead in half. With help from Ryan Fultz (LOU), Marc Rechlicz (LOU) second goal with the IceGators and cut the Pensacola lead to 3-2. The Ice Flyers quickly responded when Wilson finished off the hat trick and put Pensacola back up by two goals, 4-2. With 3:42 left in the second period, Beau McLaughlin (LOU) scored his 28th goal of the season and cut the lead in half once again.
The third period began with the IceGators trailing 4-3. The period began with the Ice Flyers on a power play left over from the second period and about a minute into the final period Jeff Bieber (LOU) was called for tripping. The âGators were able to kill each penalty. After returning to full strength, the âGators had six unanswered shots on goal from 16:23 to 12:19. With 7:00 minutes left in the game, Tyler Lyon (PEN) was called for slashing and put the IceGators on a power play. During the penalty the âGators were only able to get one shot on goal but could not tie the game up. With Louisiana trailing 4-3, the âGators were only able to get one shot on goal in the final five minutes of the game and fell short 4-3.
"We fell behind early and had to play catch up all night," replied IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski after losing to Pensacola. "When you get behind early you have to expend more energy to get back into the game and we just didn't have enough at the end."

The âGators go on the road for a Sunday afternoon game against the Pensacola Ice Flyers at 3:05 PM.
