Wenatchee AppleSox News Release

WENATCHEE, Wash. - Two more Gonzaga Bulldogs will join the AppleSox in 2015, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Tuesday.

Gage Burland and Nick Nyquist will join the AppleSox following their freshman seasons in Spokane.

"I love the support we receive from Gonzaga," Proszek said. "They always try to send quality players and individuals our way."

Burland, a native of Otis Orchards, Wash., will join the AppleSox as a right-handed pitcher. He played high school baseball at East Valley High School.

"Gage is a very talented right-handed arm," said Proszek. "Gonzaga expects him to pitch a lot for them this season, throwing in the low-to-mid 90s. He's a good competitor and a hard worker."

Burland started all four years at East Valley High School and was named First Team All-State and League MVP, his senior season. He offered 64 innings as a senior and compiled a 0.75 ERA, with 96 strikeouts. He was a First Team All-League selection each year following his freshman season.

This year he has made five appearances in relief for the Bulldogs, and has a 2.08 ERA - fourth-best amongst Gonzaga relievers. He has thrown 4 1/3 innings, and has struck out five batters. He has allowed only two walks. Opponents are averaging .214 against him, and have only collected one extra-base hit.

Nyquist, a native of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, will join the AppleSox as an infielder. He played high school baseball at Coeur d'Alene High School.

"He's a big, physical kid," Proszek said. "He's still young and has a lot to learn, but he definitely is a promising talent. I had a chance to coach his older brother at Spokane Falls and he comes from a great family of hard working kids. He will play the game the right way, is a great addition to what we are trying to do, and will fit in great."

A four-year letter winner at Coeur d'Alene, Nyquist was the Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014 and was also named the Idaho Hall of Fame Baseball Player of the Year. During his senior season he hit .506 with six home runs and 34 RBI. Nyquist was a First Team All-State and First Team All-League selection from 2012 to 2014. As a junior, he compiled a .435 average with eight home runs and 32 RBI.

Nyquist is hitting .364 in 4 games for Gonzaga, including 2 starts. He has four hits in 11 at bats and has driven in one run on the season. He has a .364 on-base percentage and owns a .958 fielding percentage.

Wenatchee opens its season with a two-game nonleague series against the San Francisco Seals, June 4-5, at Paul Thomas Sr. Field. Tickets can be purchased by calling 509-665-6900, or by visiting: http://www.applesox.com/tickets/
