71 CHL Players Selected in 2019 NHL Draft

Vancouver, B.C. - The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 71 CHL players were selected in the seven rounds of the 2019 NHL Draft held in Vancouver, accounting for more than 32% of all 217 players chosen by all 31 NHL clubs.

The 71 CHL players includes 13 selected in the opening round, counting three in the first seven picks led by Saskatoon Blades centre Kirby Dach. The second round then saw 15 CHLers selected - the highest single-round total - bringing the league's opening two-round total to 28, representing more than 45% of the top-62 selections.

Of the 71 players selected, the Western Hockey League led the way with 28 players, followed by the Ontario Hockey League at 25 and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League at 18.

By position, a total of 129 forwards were selected (46 CHL), 66 defencemen (19 CHL), and 22 goaltenders (6 CHL). The league produced two of the top five forwards chosen counting Dach and Dylan Cozens, who was selected at seventh overall by the Buffalo Sabres. On defence, Vancouver Giants blue-liner Bowen Byram was the first rearguard off the board at fourth overall to the Colorado Avalanche, while the selections of Thomas Harley (Mississauga Steelheads) to the Dallas Stars at 18th overall and Lassi Thomson to the Ottawa Senators one selection later made it a trio of CHL defencemen in the opening round. Between the pipes, the CHL produced two of the top four goaltenders chosen, counting Mads Sogaard (Medicine Hat Tigers), who went 37th to the Senators, and Hunter Jones (Peterborough Petes) who was selected at No. 59 by the Minnesota Wild.

In all, 47 CHL clubs produced at least one draft pick for the 2019 NHL Draft, led by the WHL's Kelowna Rockets with four picks. Seattle, Mississauga, and the Saginaw Spirit followed with three picks each, while in the QMJHL, four clubs - Chicoutimi, Moncton, Val-d'Or, and Victoriaville - saw two players chosen. Meanwhile, in the OHL, the London Knights pushed their league-leading active streak to five years in producing a first-round pick following Connor McMichael's selection by the Washington Capitals at 25th overall. The Knights have produced eight first rounders since 2015.

Meanwhile, 28 of the NHL's 31 clubs selected at least one CHL player, with the Florida Panthers leading the way with six selections, followed by the Colorado Avalanche at five and the New York Islanders, Senators, and St. Louis Blues all at four. Among the remaining Canadian teams, the Montreal Canadiens selected three CHL players, while the Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vancouver Canucks chose two, and the Edmonton Oilers selected one. The Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, and Winnipeg Jets were the lone NHL teams to not select a CHL player.

Following the 2019 NHL Draft, a total of 5,610 CHL players have been selected since 1969.
