66ers Come Up Short In Season Finale 105-88 At Reno

RENO, Nevada, April 4, 2010 - Marcus Lewis tied a career-high with 14 points, as the Tulsa 66ers (27-23) came up short to the Reno Bighorns (28-22) 105-88 Sunday in the regular season finale for both teams at the Reno Events Center. The win total on the regular season is the highest in franchise history for the 66ers, who also will be making their first appearance in the NBA D-League Playoffs starting next week. Resting a lot of the starters for the majority of the game, both Oklahoma City Thunder assignees Byron Mullens and Mustafa Shakur combined for six points, two assists and a steal in under 12 minutes of game action.
With the game tied at eight apiece, and 8:46 remaining in the first quarter, the Bighorns went on a 15-4 run to build a 23-12 advantage after an alley-oop dunk by Doug Thomas with 4:18 left. The 66ers battled back to within eight at 25-17 after a Lewis jump hook with 2:19 remaining in the quarter, but trailed at the break 32-22. Farmer hit all five of his three-point attempts for 15 first quarter points, as the Bighorns shot 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the field. Deron Washington scored seven points and grabbed three boards for Tulsa, who connected on 10-of-20 field goals.
After a Cezary Trybanski lay up pushed the Bighorns lead to 36-24 with 10:08 left in the first half, the 66ers rallied back with a 16-5 run to get to within 41-40 after a conventional three-point-play by DeVon Hardin with 5:29 remaining. Reno finished the quarter outscoring Tulsa 13-6, and took a 54-46 lead into halftime.
With the Bighorns ahead by eight at 61-53 with 6:37 remaining in the third period, the 66ers rallied once again with a 9-2 run and took their first lead of the game at 64-63 following a Cecil Brown jumper with 3:01 on the clock. Reno took back the lead with a Richie Frahm three-pointer the next possession, and went into the final quarter with a 71-70 advantage. The Bighorns shot 7-for-19 from the field in the period. Latavious Williams led Tulsa with 8 points and six rebounds in the quarter, as they shot 9-for-20 from the field and out rebounded Reno 13-9.
The fourth quarter started out as a back-and-forth flurry, as the two teams remained tied at 81 with 9:14 left in the contest. Reno broke the game open from there, as Frahm buried two and Yaroslav Korolev hit one three-pointer during a 24-7 run to finish the contest.
As four of the five starters for Tulsa played under nine minutes in the contest, led by Lewis the 66ers finished with five players in double figure scoring. Williams finished with his ninth double-double with 12 points and 12 points, while Brown added 12 points as well. DeVon Hardin scored 11 points and grabbed five boards, while Wink Adams added 10 points. JaJuan Smith nearly finished with a triple-double, as he put up nine points, eight assts and eight rebounds to go along with four steals.
Desmon Farmer led the Bighorns with a game-high 19 points. Trybanski and Korolev each had double-doubles with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 16 points, 10 rebounds respectively. Chris Davis came off the bench for 13 points, while DJ Strawberry dished out 11 assists.
The 66ers will return home in preparation for a Round one match up with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the 2010 NBA D-League Playoffs. Game one will be played at the Tulsa Convention Center in downtown Tulsa, while games two and three (if necessary) will be in Sioux Falls. The Bighorns will remain in Reno in preparation for their first round match up with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. First round game dates and times, as well as announcements for ticket on-sale dates for the playoffs will be made at a later date.
