Dayton Gems News Release
Yesterday, over 40 professional players took to the ice at Hara Arena to begin practice for the upcoming Gems training camp that begins October 5. Greg Labenski, captain for the Gems, called the practice to ready players for the upcoming season.
"A lot of guys haven't been on the ice all summer, they need the chance to get back in shape" said Head Coach John Marks. Marks, who isn't allowed on the ice until the start of camp, said he too has been itching to get back out there.
The players have come from all around, the US, Canada, Holland, Finland, and even Russia. The practice looked very good, with a lot of speed on the ice, the guys were giving each other the chance to really showcase their best. With over 40 guys preparing for the camp, and only 18 spots to fill on the roster, the competition should be key.
"There are a lot of good skaters. A lot of good shooters. We've got to pick the best" said Guy Trottier, Director of Hockey Ops and Assistant Coach.
Officially, training camp begins October 5 and runs through October 14, the date of the Gems second exhibition game. The Gems season opener is Friday October 16.
