San Jose CyberRays News Release

SAN JOSE (Feb. 5, 2003) – San Jose CyberRays LaKeysia Beene, Thori Bryan and Brandi Chastain have been named to train for the United States team for its Feb. 16 soccer match against Iceland in Charleston, S.C.

The three players are national team veterans, and Bryan and Chastain have represented the United States in previous World Cups. They are among 24 players chosen by U.S. coach April Heinrichs to train for the match, which is the second home match for the United States as it prepares for the Women's World Cup to be played this fall in China. All three played in the Four Nations Tournament last month in the World Cup venues.

Beene, the 2001 WUSA goalkeeper of the year, is the women's professional league's all-time shutout leader, and she was the No.1 U.S. keeper for most of 2002. Bryan, a defender, played for the United States in the 1995 World Cup in Sweden and was an alternate for the 1996 Olympic team. Chastain played for the United States in the 2001 World Cup in China – the first women's world championship – the 1999 World Cup in the United States, and on both the 1996 and 2000 Olympic teams.

The match against Iceland will figure into Heinrich's roster choices for the March 14-20 Algarve Cup in Portugal, the most important event in women's international soccer outside the World Cup and Olympic Games.
