Atlanta Beat News Release
ATLANTA (February 5, 2003) - Atlanta Beat forward Cindy Parlow and goalkeeper Briana Scurry, were today named to the 24-player U.S. Women's National Team roster for a five-day training camp in Charleston, South Carolina, before facing Iceland on Sunday, February 16, at Blackbaud Stadium. The match will kick off at 6 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
Parlow and Scurry most recently helped lead the U.S. Women's National Team to a first place finish in the Four Nations Tournament in China, where the team faced Germany, Norway and the 2003 Women's World Cup host, China. The squad for this training camp features 16 players from the Four Nations Tournament championship team, as well as forward Mia Hamm (Washington Freedom) and midfielders Kristine Lilly (Boston Breakers) and Julie Foudy (San Diego Spirit). The Iceland match will give Heinrichs a last look at her player pool before she names the roster for the 2003 Algarve Cup, taking place in Portugal from March 14-20.
U.S. Head Coach April Heinrichs will select a team of 18 from the 24 players in camp to face Iceland. It will be the second-ever match for the U.S. Women at Blackbaud Stadium after opening the 2002 national team campaign there on Janauary 12, with a 7-0 win over Mexico in front of a sold-out crowd.
Tickets ranging in price levels from $18 to $35 are on sale now at all TicketMaster outlets throughout the Carolinas (including Publix and Cat's Music Stores), at Blackbaud Stadium during business hours, by phone (843-554-6060), and on-line at www.ussoccer.com. Groups of 20 or more can order through U.S. Soccer at 312-528-1290. Parlow is coming off a stellar 2002 for the U.S. Women's National Team, as she played in and started 14 matches, logged 969 minutes and notched 14 goals and two assists. She has appeared in 115 games and scored 57 goals for the U.S. Women. Scurry heads into the training camp coming off a 1-0 victory over Germany, which helped the U.S. capture the Four Nations Tournament title. She also heads into this year off a strong performance in goal throughout 2002. Scurry played in eight matches and recorded five starts. She played a total of 589 minutes in 2002, had three individual shutouts, and allowed only two goals for a 0.30 goals against average.
