25 Fomer Dragons to Participate in Reds Major League Camp

Dayton, Ohio-Twenty-five (25) former members of the Dayton Dragons are slated to participate in major league spring training camp with the Cincinnati Reds in Sarasota, Florida. The number of former Dragons in camp with the Reds is up from 20 at the start of spring training in 2008. Reds pitchers and catchers reported to camp on Saturday while the balance of the squad is due to report tomorrow (Tuesday).

Fifteen (15) of the 25 former Dragons will be in camp with the Reds as part of the club's 40-man major league roster. The remaining 10 former Dragons will be among a group of 23 non-roster invitees in Reds' camp.

Former Dragons on the Reds' 40-man roster include pitchers Homer Bailey ('05 Dragons), Johnny Cueto ('06), Carlos Fisher ('06), Robert Manuel ('06), Ramon Ramirez ('05), and Daryl Thompson ('07); catchers Ryan Hanigan ('02-'03) and Craig Tatum ('05-'06); infielders Edwin Encarnacion ('02), Juan Francisco ('07), Paul Janish ('05-'06), Adam Rosales ('05-'06), and Joey Votto ('03-'04); and outfielders Jay Bruce ('06), and Chris Dickerson ('04).

Former Dragons who will open the spring with the Reds as non-roster players include pitchers James Avery ('05 Dragons), Jordan Smith ('07), and Pedro Viola ('07); catchers Chris Denove ('06), Chris Kroski ('04-'05), and Devin Mesoraco ('08); infielders Luis Bolivar ('03-'04), Todd Frazier ('08), and Chris Valaika ('07); and outfielder Drew Stubbs ('07).

Additionally, pitcher David Weathers, on the Reds' 40-man roster, pitched in two games for the Dragons in 2008 on an injury rehabilitation assignment while on the Reds' disabled list.

The Dragons open the 2009 season under new manager Todd Benzinger on Thursday, April 9th against the Great Lakes Loons. Prior to opening night, the Dragons will host the Cincinnati Reds Futures Game at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 4th. The Reds will meet a collection of their top minor league prospects at Fifth Third Field.
