2022 Colorado Mammoth Playoff Information, Seeding Scenarios

April 27, 2022 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release

As Week 22 gets set to kick off seven energy-packed games of late-season NLL action, the Colorado Mammoth has clinched its playoff berth and now awaits the results of several seeding scenarios to be decided this Saturday.

As the league's playoff picture continues to reveal itself, we've compiled some useful information and updates that will help Mammoth fans understand the team's potential road to victory and familiarize all lacrosse fans with the NLL's new playoff format.

How many teams make the NLL playoffs?

The top three teams in the West and top four teams from the East will combine to form the first seven spots. The final Wild Card spot belongs to the team with the next best record, from either conference.

Eight teams total will clinch playoff berths - Entering Week 22 of NLL play, six of the eight bids have been spoken for, as the Buffalo Bandits, Toronto Rock, Halifax Thunderbirds have secured spots in the East, while the Calgary Roughnecks and San Diego Seals join your Colorado Mammoth in having clinched spots in the West. The remaining two spots up for grabs will be held by two of the remaining teams in contention, which include the Georgia Swarm, Albany FireWolves and Philadelphia Wings.

How does the new NLL playoff structure work?

Since converting its divisions into East and West conferences and welcoming its 14th team earlier this season, the NLL has shifted its playoff structure for the 2021-22 season. Consisting of three rounds, this year's Chase for the Championship MEANS MORE:

Round One: The NLL Quarterfinals will consist of four single-elimination games set to be played the weekend of May 6-9

Round Two: The NLL Conference Finals dons a best-of-three series, with games set to be played during the weekends of May 12-16, May 19-23, and if necessary, May 26-30. The higher seed will assume home field advantage, hosting the first game of the series, and if necessary, the third as well

Round Three: This year's NLL Finals will also feature a best-of-three series, with games set for the weekends of June 2-6, June 9-13, and if necessary, June 16-20. Similar to the Conference Finals, the higher seed will assume home field advantage, hosting the first game of the series, and if necessary, the third as well

Current NLL playoff scenarios

Heading into the weekend, the Mammoth brings a 10-7 record into its final matchup of the season, as the squad prepares to visit Calgary for another dramatic showdown in the West. Had the playoffs begun this weekend, Colorado would be slated to host the wild card team at Ball Arena, while the San Diego Seals would be set to host the lately-surging Calgary Roughnecks at Pechanga Arena. However, Week 22 has plans to shake up the standings, yet providing each of the conference's top three teams the opportunity to control their ultimate seeding positions. With zero of the two West Conference home games currently spoken for, the "every game counts" motto couldn't resonate louder throughout the NLL this year, as five of this week's seven contests have direct postseason implications.

Should Colorado be able to capture an elusive victory on the road in Calgary, it would claim the West Conference championship and secure home field advantage through the first two rounds of the postseason tournament. If the Mammoth happens to drop Saturday's contest, but San Diego also loses to the Vancouver Warriors, the Loud House will still be rocking next weekend, as Colorado would secure the second seed and host its rival in the San Diego Seals at Ball Arena. Furthering the complexity, if the Mammoth drops its game Saturday against the Roughnecks and the Seals exit their bout victorious, Colorado will head right back to Calgary next weekend for a rematch.

With the one, two and three seeds guaranteed to be rewarded to the Mammoth, Roughnecks and Seals, the league's wild card spot still remains unclaimed, with three organizations vying for the last-chance spot. Depending on the results of the East Conference's matchups this weekend, the wild card position could be occupied by either the Georgia Swarm, Albany FireWolves or Philadelphia Wings, who will travel to meet the one seed next weekend.

While the Buffalo Bandits (14-3) and Toronto Rock (12-5) have secured first-round home games via earning the East's first and second seeds, respectively, the only other team in the East to clinch its berth but yet to find out its seeding position, the Halifax Thunderbirds, can control their own destiny in locking up the three seed by defeating the Rochester Knighthawks this weekend. Currently on the outside looking in, the Georgia Swarm could potentially claim the three seed as well, if they're able to secure a victory over the Philadelphia Wings Saturday (which also has several implications on the east's fourth seed and wild card spot) and see the Thunderbirds drop their contest as well.

As referenced above, the fourth seed in the East is a bit hectic, as Albany, Georgia, Philadelphia and Halifax all have paths to potentially secure the fourth seed, pending their own contest results and corresponding conference opponents.
