September 8, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release

Pearl, MS - The 2009 Mississippi Braves pitching staff was, by statistical accounts, the best in team history. The M-Braves set new team records in nearly every statistical category during the '09 campaign.

Mississippi's pitching staff got the majority of its starts from Kyle Cofield, Scott Diamond, Deunte Heath, Tim Gustafson, Edgar Osuna, Jeff Lyman, Jose Ortegano, Ryne Reynoso and Jonny Venters. Most of the relief was provided by Brett Butts, Rafael Cruz, Bryan Dumesnil, Jerome Gamble, Cory Gearrin, Kevin Gunderson, Gustafson, Heath, Craig Kimbrel, Lyman and Steve Marek. They combined to set new team records for team ERA, complete games, fewest hits, earned runs, home runs and opponent's average.

The M-Braves had a team ERA of 3.57, best in team history. They had three complete games and allowed only 1131 hits, five fewer than the 2005 ballclub. Mississippi's pitchers gave up 482 earned runs, 87 earned runs fewer than the '05 club and 71 home runs, five less than 2005's staff. In addition, the 2009 pitching staff held opponents to a .248 average, a new team record.

The M-Braves pitching staff saw marked improvement under third-year Manager Phillip Wellman and first-year Pitching Coach Marty Reed.
