Jackson Generals News Release

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs is pleased to announce that West Tenn center fielder Ezequiel Carrera has won the 2009 Southern League Batting Championship with a .337 average.

Carrera became the first Diamond Jaxx player to win a league batting title, hitting .337 to eclipse the team record of .329, set by Richard Lewis in 2004. West Tenn's speedy leadoff man also ranked first in the league with a .441 on-base percentage, which was third among all full-season minor leaguers.

The 22-year-old outfielder started the season on a tear and batted .357 in April and hit at a .344 clip in May before being sidelined with an ankle injury for the remainder of the month. Carrera returned to the lineup June 19 and shook off the rust quickly, batting .316 in 11 June games. On July 8, Carrera injured his right thumb and missed 18 games but returned on August 1 and batted .361 the remainder of the season.

Carrera was an easy choice for the Southern League North Division All-Star Team and was named to the circuit's postseason All-Star squad last week. He was named the Florida State League's best defensive outfielder by Baseball America following the 2008 season.

Carrera, a native of Guiria, Venezuela, notched a 25-game on-base streak from April 9 - May 7. During that stretch, he batted .356 (32-90) and drew 23 walks against 17 strikeouts. For the season, Carrera nearly walked more times (59) than he struck out (62). He also feasted on right-handed pitching, batting .362 (85-235) with 29 of his 38 RBI.
