2007 Greyhound Training Camp Opens On March 9th

March 7, 2007 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF)
Ohio Valley Greyhounds News Release

The new and returning Greyhound players will begin arriving in Wheeling this week-end to start Training Camp in preparation for the upcoming season. Thirty four (34) players have been signed to the Hound's roster and they will compete for 24 positions that will remain after the final cut takes place.

The Hounds will be led this year by Freddy Ray at quarterback. Freddy, a native of Martins Ferry, Ohio had a stellar career at Martins Ferry High School, Ohio University and professionally in Texas and Huntington. Freddy's two years of Indoor quarterbacking experience will be invaluable this season with returning wide receivers Willie Austin and Darrell Dowery as well as several standout new players that have been signed.

"We are expecting the passing game to pick up right where Matt Kohn and the Hound passing attack left off in the 2006 season", said Ervin Bryson, new Greyhound coach for the 2007 season. Freddy's speed, quick release, his ability to scramble, and the talented wide receiving corps we are assembling will continue to give us a potent passing attack", said Bryson.

One of the focuses of the 2007 season will be the return of the running game that the Greyhounds have established over the years. Three stand-out running backs have been signed and will be in camp competing for the starting jobs.

"We are pleased with the talent we are bringing in to re-establish the ground game that the Hounds have been famous for in the past", said Bryson. "We know how important a dominant running attack is to open up the passing game, wear down your opponents, and control the tempo of the game. We expect to have the talent in camp this year to do that",

In addition to the running and passing game, the Greyhounds have brought two excellent kickers into camp to compete for that position. John Werhle, the Hounds outstanding kicker for the past several years including the 2002 & 2003 Championship seasons, will not be returning this year. In Professional Indoor Football the kicking game becomes a very important component of both the offensive and defensive attack.

" We think we have two very good prospects for this position" said Bryson. "It will come down to which one has more power, distance, and accuracy".

"There will be plenty of players competing for the defensive secondary as well as the defensive and offensive line positions. We know that those are positions that need to be improved upon from the 2006 season and we expect to bring a lot of talent to those positions", said Bryson.
