SAN DIEGO - Manager Terry Kennedy made his roster cuts today, cutting five members of the Surf Dawgs 27-man spring roster to meet the Golden Baseball League's requirement of 22. The loss of first basemen Graham Koonce leaves the Dawgs with one roster spot open with only 21 players on the opening day roster. There is huge speculation on who may enter the fold to occupy this final roster spot.
San Diego will have 13 of the members from last year's GBL Championship team returning to help them make a run at back-to-back titles. Looking to help the 13 returnees will be the eight new faces in Surf Dawgs uniforms.
Matthew Connolly will join the outfield patrol along with fellow Dawgs Seth Pietsch and Scott Goodman. Connolly, who currently resides in Brooklyn, N.Y., will bring a valuable left-handed bat to the Surf Dawgs lineup in 2006. The other two position players joining San Diego will be shortstop Justin Moore and catcher Kevin Reinking.
Five new faces will be introduced into the Surf Dawgs pitching staff for 2006. Marcos Mendoza, a former pitcher at San Diego State University, will make the opening day start tomorrow in Yuma for the Dawgs. Mendoza, along with newcomer Brent Pourciau, will join Chris George, Chris Gale, and Justin Ottman in San Diego's starting five.
E.J. Shanks, Joe Safken and Will Carr will be the new faces coming out of the bullpen in 2006. Moving to a closing role will be Josh Rummonds, who was 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA last season. He held opponents to a .216 batting average and had a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (27 strikeouts to 9 walks) in 24 innings of work.
