
2004 Begins With Huntsville Channel Cats in First Place

The SEHL will reach the half-way point in the 2003-04 regular season this week when Cape Fear visits Winston-Salem on Saturday night (10th) and league game #56 (of 112) will be played. The Huntsville Channel Cats begin the week's action in first place with a record of 18 wins and 7 losses. Coming off a perfect 4-0 week, the Cats have an eight point lead in the standings over second place Winston-Salem and a fourteen point lead over third place Knoxville.
Huntsville and Winston-Salem play an important home and home series beginning Thursday night in Huntsville at the Von Braun Center and continuing Friday night back in Winston-Salem at the Joel Coliseum Annex. The Cape Fear Fire Antz, winners of two in a row, hosts the Knoxville Ice Bears on Friday night in Fayetteville at the Crown Coliseum. Knoxville continues on the road on Saturday, traveling to Huntsville while the Fire Antz travel back to Winston-Salem on Saturday.
SEHL Playoff Format
The South East Hockey League announced its playoff format for the 2003-04 season on December 29th. The top three teams from the regular season will qualify for the playoffs. In the first round, the regular season champion will receive a first round bye while the second and third place teams will play a best of three series. In the SEHL Championship series, the regular season champion will play the winner of the first round in a best of five series.
SEHL Player of the Week
James Patterson of the Huntsville Channel Cats is the South East Hockey League Player of the Week. In four games last week Patterson, from Wayne, Michigan, tallied 7 goals and 8 assists for 15 points. The former 1999-00 CHL Rookie of the Year currently leads the SEHL in scoring with 16 goals-39 assists-55 points. He also leads the league in assists with his 39. Patterson played college hockey at the University of Denver.
SEHL Goaltender of the Week
Kevin Fines of the Cape Fear Fire Antz is the South East Hockey League Goaltender of the Week. The native of Sarnia, Ontario went 2-1 in his first week in the SEHL stopping 86 of 92 shots on goal. Fines posted back-to-back victories against Winston-Salem, including a 9-0 shutout on January 3rd where he stopped all 32 shots that he faced. For the week he posted a 2.02 goals against average and a 93.5% save percentage. After three years at the University of Findlay, Fines began this year with Lubbock in the CHL.

K.J. Voorhees of the Knoxville Ice Bears and Allan Carr of the Huntsville Channel Cats are tied for the most goals in the SEHL with 23.
Matt Carmichael of the Huntsville Channel Cats leads all SEHL goaltenders with a 2.70 goals against average, 15 wins, 2 shutouts, and a save percentage of 92.4%.
Aaron Shrieves of the Cape Fear Fire Antz leads the SEHL in penalty minutes with 172 penalty minutes.
Did You Know
Cape Fear Head Coach Scott Rex, while playing for the Slough Jets in the British Premier League, scored 70, 89, 71, and 83 goals respectively in 163 games between 1990-91 and 1993-94.
