Memphis Xplorers News Release

Southaven, MS-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 have been assigned OL/DL Lewis Powell by the league office.

Powell (6'3, 310) graduated from the University of Utah in 2003, after playing in 32 games for the Utes. During his senior season, Powell started in six of 12 games, including the Liberty Bowl, where he earned Defensive Player of the Game honors. As a senior, he recorded 33 total tackles, including eight for a loss, and added two sacks to his career total of five.

"Lewis Powell is a player that has proven himself at the NCAA level," stated Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "Being the defensive MVP in the Liberty Bowl, and having NFL camp experience with the Cleveland Browns indicates to us that he a lot of upside potential. We are excited about this assignment."

In the 2003 Liberty Bowl against Southern Mississippi, Powell recovered two fumbles and recorded a tackle for a loss, as the Utes shutout the Golden Eagles 17-0.

Memphis Director of Player Personnel Chris Bauer added the following on Powell," Lewis Powell is big, late pre-season pickup for us. Top to bottom this group of lineman should prove to be among the best ever assembled in the af2. We are excited about our line's ability to bring significant heat on the opposing quarterbacks, and conversely thrilled with our ability to teach the required skill set to protect our quarterback."

Powell has two cousins and an older brother who played in the NFL. He was signed by the Cleveland Browns as a free agent, and was later released.

The Xplorers were ten game winners in their 2004 playoff season. For group and season ticket information call 662-393-3761. Memphis Xplorers Arena Football! Back in Black!
