Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA -- The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs and Head Coach Scott Muscutt have announced their official team roster for opening night of the 2002-03 hockey season. After what Muscutt called, "the most competitive training camp in franchise history," the team roster consists of 17 active players for tomorrow night's opening game against the Memphis RiverKings at the CenturyTel Center.
"There were plenty of tough decisions, as I expected," said Coach Muscutt. "But I have full confidence in our roster. We've been able to bring back a lot of key veterans that have been a part of our success in the past, as well as some very exciting rookies that are ready to make an impact in the CHL."
Eleven players from last year's roster return to the Mudbugs for the 2002-03 season, including the team's five veterans (as per league rules) â player/assistant coach Trevor Buchanan, player/assistant coach Forbes MacPherson, Tony Bergin, Jim Sprott, and Mark Rupnow. Other key returnees include Dan Wildfong, Jason Campbell, Craig Minard, and David Mills.
In goal, the Mudbugs also bring back Jonathan Forest and Ken Carroll to form one of the top goaltending duos in the Central Hockey League. Carroll returns as the top netminder after spending the 2002 season in the East Coast Hockey League. In 2001, Carroll was named WPHL Goaltender and Rookie of the Year. Forest led the CHL in playoff save percentage last year (.927).
"Goaltending will be the strength of this team," said Muscutt. "Both Kenny and Jonathan are elite goaltenders at this level and with one of them between the pipes, we're going to have the chance to win a lot of hockey games."
The Mudbugs also have four rookies listed on their roster for the new season. Newcomer Jon Maruk spent last year with the University of Notre Dame (NCAA) and scored a goal in the Mudbugs' exhibition game on Saturday against the Wichita Thunder. Defenseman Jason Basile has spent the last four years with the Ferris State Bulldogs of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Other newcomers include, Jeff Glowa (Calgary, Alberta) and Willie Hubloo (Kuujjua, Quebec). Three players will begin the season on the injured reserve list. Forwards Chris Brassard, Chad Spurr, and Forbes MacPherson will be inactive for tomorrow night's opening game.
The Mudbugs will take on the Memphis RiverKings tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City, LA. They will then travel to Memphis for a Friday night rematch with the RiverKings before returning home to meet the Fort Worth Brahmas on Saturday night.
