FLORENCE, S.C.- On a warm humid Tuesday night, the Columbia Blowfish traveled just south to take on the (1-5) second half Florence Red Wolves at Sparrow Stadium.
The Blowfish opened the scoring in the top of the second with Erik Barber (UCF) led off the inning doubling to left. After a line out to the second baseman and a strikeout, Blowfish second baseman D.C. Arendas (South Carolina), also doubled to left, scoring barber. In the top half of the third inning Columbia stuck two on the board. Eros Modena (Bethune-Cookman), led the inning off with a single to left, stealing second and third on the ensuing pitches, Modena attempted stealing home but was caught. Chase Shelton (Charleston Southern), singled and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder. Barber walked, Connor Lewis (Lander), singled up the middle, scoring Shelton. Blowfish Catcher Dylan Kelly (Missouri), was hit by a pitch, and Arendas was also walked, scoring barber.
In the bottom half of the inning the Red Wolves scored one with an RBI by Stephen Dowling (USC Upstate).
Columbia would go on to score two more runs the remainder of the night as Blowfish pitching would hold Florence there for the remainder of the game.
The Columbia Blowfish would go on to beat the Red Wolves of a score 5-to-2.
The Starter for the Blowfish Tuesday night was right-hander Zack Russell-Myers (Bluefield), tossing six innings giving up just one run off of four hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Derrick Smith (College of Charleston), come on for the final three innings, giving up one run off of three hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. Russell-Myers picked up the win improving him to (4-3) on the season.
Nathan Foriest (Middle Tennessee State) was the Red Wolves starter as he threw just three innings giving up three runs off of six hits, four walks, and two strikeouts. Jason Harris came on in relief in the fifth inning, tossing four innings giving up two runs off of one hit, one walk and two strikeouts. Foriest picked up the loss moving him to (0-2) on the season.
The Blowfish are now (6-1) in the second half of the season sitting in first place of the Western Standings of the Coastal Plain League.
The Columbia Blowfish will be back in action at home Wednesday night July 17th hosting the Gastonia Grizzlies with first pitch set for 7:05pm. Gates open at 6:00pm.
