Colorado 14ers News Release
DENVER - March 10, 2009 - For the second time in three weeks, the Colorado 14ers set a new franchise record for points in a game in a 147-119 win over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at the Broomfield Event Center Tuesday night. The 14ers never trailed and set another team mark with 49 points in the fourth quarter to pick up their eighth consecutive win on the home court.
Seven Colorado players scored in double figures, led by 27 points from Denver Nuggets assigned player Sonny Weems. Weems added six rebounds, seven assists, and two steals off the bench in the win.
"It all starts with our defense. When we are active defensively it gets us into our break," said 14ers head coach Bob MacKinnon. "Sonny's doing a great job of moving the ball, sharing the ball, and playing on the defensive end. He's doing a terrific job there to help set the tone."
Colorado's starting backcourt of Eddie Gill and Dominique Coleman also combined for 41 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists in the win. John Lucas chimed in with 17 apiece, and Josh Davis added 16 points as the 14ers improved to 6-0 on the season against the Vipers.
After trailing by 28 midway through the second quarter, Rio Grande Valley cut the margin to as low as 10 in the third period behind the hot hand of Jawad Williams. Williams had a game-high 29 points, but did not score in the fourth quarter when Colorado pulled away. The trio of Ernest Scott, Quin Humphrey, and Craig Winder also combined for 48 points off the bench in defeat.
The 14ers and the Vipers will play again on Thursday night, with a 7:00 MST tip at the Broomfield Event Center.
