IRVINE, California - Real Monarchs took a 1-0 loss at ANTEATER STADIUM against ORANGE COUNTY BLUES FC on Saturday night.
DF Roy Meeus scored the lone goal for Orange County off of a penalty kick in the 22nd minute and the 10-man Monarchs couldn't find the equalizer.
In the 60th minute, Monarchs DF Chris Schuler was shown a red card, forcing the Monarchs to play down to just ten men for the final half-hour as Real fell to 4-7-4 on the season.
The battle got underway right from the start with both teams fighting for consistent possession. The Monarchs developed a rhythm first, connecting passes and moving the ball well across the field. As the match developed, both teams evenly possessed the game.
The game changer came in just the 22nd minute of play. After a handball was called on MF Tyler Arnone in the box, Meeus of Orange County converted the penalty shot into the game-winning goal.
As the sense of urgency built to net a goal for the Monarchs, both sides grew into a heated frenzy. Players on both sides began collecting cards, with six yellow cards joining Schuler's second-half red card.
The Monarchs had several solid chances for an equalizer, including a penalty kick in the 82nd minute taken by MF Ricardo Velazco. But the PK missed wide, leaving the Monarchs with a 1-0 loss on the road.
Real Monarchs will hit the road next week to face Colorado Springs on June 26 at Switchbacks Stadium, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
