Phoenix Rising FC News Release
PEORIA, Ariz. - In the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, Arizona United Soccer Club toppled Saint Louis FC, 2-1. United has now won two consecutive matches.
"The most important thing in this league is getting points," said Arizona United head coach Frank Yallop. "I thought we deserved the win tonight. I thought we played pretty well most of the game and in hot conditions. We could have scored more than two goals tonight, but it was good to get the win."
United opened the scoring early, following a giveaway in the midfield. Midfielder Luke Rooney picked up the ball and then threaded a long pass to forward Tyler Blackwood. After running passed a defender, Blackwood calmly placed his shot out of reach of the diving goalkeeper to make it 1-0.
Forward Long Tan added to the lead in the 58th minute. Defender Peter Kelly it a long, left-to-right diagonal pass from the midfield to the top right corner of the penalty box. Tan then chipped a shot over the oncoming goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
"I like our front four," Yallop said. "I think they are dangerous, we are dynamic, we are not predictable, which is a good thing sometimes. It showed tonight, I thought it was our best attacking display."
Saint Louis' Jordan Roberts scored the final goal of the match. Following a bad Arizona United turnover, Roberts had an open net for an easy goal.
"Anytime you can whip out a clean sheet like last weekend it's good," Yallop said. "This one should've been a clean sheet, I think. But we were pretty close to it and we won the game so that's what's important."
Arizona United will be back in league action this coming Wednesday, June 22, when they take on Rio Grande Valley FC on the road. That match will kickoff at 5:30 P.M. The club returns home on Saturday, June 25, against Sacramento Republic FC.
