WEEK IN REVIEW FOR THE CARDINALS
Information provided by Tony Suarez, Media Relations for Palm Beach Cardinals
Making his first start of season for the Cardinals, Oscar Alvarez blanked the Manatees for seven innings and Mark Worrell picked up his 30th save of the season as the Cardinals beat Brevard County 1-0 on Friday night. Joe Mather drove in the lone run for the Cardinals with a second-inning double to give Alvarez all the support he would need. Alvarez (2-0) did not walk any Manatees' hitters and allowed just four hits. Cardinals' first-round pick Tyler Greene, playing in his first game at Roger Dean Stadium, finished 2-for-4.
Bo Hall shutout the Cardinals for five innings, and Travis Ezi and Lou Palmisano each drove home a run as the Cardinals fell short 2-1 to the Brevard County Manatees on Saturday night. Hall (1-2) allowed just two hits and struck out four against the Cardinals. Cardinals' starter Mike Parisi (pictured) pitched well despite suffering the loss. Parisi (4-5) gave up one run and seven hits over six innings. The Manatees broke the scoreless tie with a run in the fifth, and both teams traded runs in the seventh. The Cardinals plated their run on a pinch-hit single by John Santor. Jarrett Hoffpauir finished 2-for-4 for the Cardinals.
Reid Gorecki singled home Tyler Greene to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning as Palm Beach defeated Brevard County 4-3 at Roger Dean Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals (34-23) rallied from a 3-0 deficit entering the bottom of the third inning with flawless work from the bullpen. Jose Garcia hurled four scoreless frames, follwed by two from winning pitcher Chris Russ (2-2) before Mark Worrell nailed down his league leading 31st save of the season with a perfect ninth. Tim Dillard (11-10) took the loss for the Manatees, allowing four runs on eight hits through seven-plus innings. Palm Beach maintains its half-game lead over second place Vero Beach, who crushed Jupiter 18-9 in Dodgertown earlier in the day. The Manatees (30-26) drop to three and a half games back of the Cardinals with the loss. Palm Beach manufactured a run in third inning as Jarrett Hoffpauir's ground out to shortstop scored John Santor from third after leading off the inning with a double. The Cardinals continued to rally in the fourth when Terry Evans slammed a double to centerfield scoring Andy Schutzenhofer and Reid Gorecki. Schutzenhofer, Gorecki and Evans all had two hits for the Cardinals, while Travis Ezi and Adam Heether each tallied two for the Manatees.
Ty Parker went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI and Mark Michael gave up just one run over six innings as the Cardinals defeated the Daytona Cubs 11-2 on Monday night. With the loss by Vero Beach at Brevard County by the score of 6-1 on Monday, the Cardinals (35-23) increased their lead in the East Division to 1 ½ games over the Dodgers (33-24). The game was scoreless into the bottom of the third, when the Cardinals erupted for seven runs on seven hits off Cubs' starter J.R. Mathes (9-8) to blow the game open. Matt Pagnozzi and Tyler Greene singled to get the rally going, and with two outs, the Cardinals put together five straight hits. Highlighting the inning was a single up the middle by Reid Gorecki that plated two, and a double by Terry Evans that also scored a pair. The Cardinals added a run in the fourth to make it 8-0, and that score remained until the sixth inning. The Cubs (27-29) broke the shutout in the sixth with a run off Cardinals' starter Mark Michael (4-4), and then something happened that is rarely seen in baseball - the Cubs batted out of order. Issmael Salas had been hitting ahead of J.J. Johnson the entire night, but when Salas singled to score two runs in the sixth, Cardinals' manager Ron "Pop" Warner approached home plate umpire Tyler Funneman to check the lineup card. On the lineup card that was exchanged at home plate, Johnson was scheduled to bat ahead of Salas. Johnson was ruled an automatic out, and Salas was forced to get back in the batter's box and the runs were taken off the board. Salas chopped the ball out in front of home plate and was retired for the third out. Ty Parker hit his ninth home run of the season in the seventh, and the Cubs added two more runs in the eighth for the final tally.
The Cubs scored seven times in the first off Cardinals' starter Dennis Dove and went on to blank the Cardinals 9-0 on Tuesday night. Dove (2-4) last just 2/3 of an inning and was responsible for all seven runs scored. The top of the first lasted nearly 40 minutes, and included five hits, four walks, a throwing error, and a balk. After an hour-long first inning, the rest of the game was played in under two hours. Randy Wells (9-2) shut down the Cardinals offense and allowed just two hits over seven innings. The Cardinals managed just three hits on the night and stranded just three runners.
For the second outing in a row, Oscar Alvarez pitched seven shutout innings as the Cardinals held on to beat the Daytona Cubs 1-0 on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. After being shutout on Tuesday night by the Cubs, the Cardinals responded in a big way in a game they needed to win. Entering play on Wednesday, the Cardinals held just a ½-game lead over the Vero Beach Dodgers in the East Division. Alvarez (3-0) was masterful for his second straight start. He allowed just four hits and did not give up a walk while striking out six. The Cardinals scored their only run in the bottom of the first. Tyler Greene led off the game with an opposite field double to right. Mike McCoy bunted Greene to third base, and Reid Gorecki drove home the run with a groundout. The Cardinals had plenty of opportunities to tack on more runs, but were unable to come with the big hit when they needed it. They finished 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, and in the sixth inning, Gorecki was out on an attempt for a straight steal of home plate. Rich Scalamandre pitched a perfect eighth for Palm Beach, and Mark Worrell came on in the ninth to nail down his 32rd save. The shutout for the Cardinals was their league-leading 14th of the season by their pitching staff.
Entering Friday night with the slimmest of leads in the East Division over the Vero Beach Dodgers, the Cardinals hit their way to a 7-4 win over the Brevard County Manatees. Led by Terry Evans and Jarrett Hoffpaur who each went 3-for-4, and Tony McQuade who went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, the Cardinals pounded out 16 hits and broke the game open with a four-run fifth off Manatees' starter Bo Hall (1-3). The Cardinals took an early 3-0 lead, but the Manatees fought back in the bottom of the fourth against Mike Parisi. Parisi (5-5) struggled in the fourth, but otherwise pitched well. In total he allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings to even his record. The Cardinals took a 7-2 lead into the ninth, but Cards' reliever Justin Garza was unable to retire a batter, giving up hits to the first four batters he faced. Mark Worrell came on with the bases loaded and no one out and allowed one hit, but was able to work his way out of trouble to earn his 33rd save.
The Manatees used a pair of four-run innings and pounded out 15 hits as they beat the Cardinals by a score of 8-4 on Saturday night. Although the Cardinals lost, they picked up half game in the standings as the second-place Vero Beach Dodgers dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Jupiter. Things started out looking good for the Cards on Saturday, as they plated two first inning runs to take the early lead off Manatees' starter Tim Dillard. After back-to-back singles by Tyler Greene and Andy Schutzenhofer to start the game, Reid Gorecki grounded out to score Greene, and Schutzenhofer scored on a wild pitch. The Manatees answered with four runs in the second off Eric Haberer (8-5) to take the lead for good. Haberer lasted just four innings and allowed four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out five. The Cardinals scored a run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 4-3, but that would be as close as they would come as the Manatees again scored four times in an inning - this time off Chris Russ in the seventh - to ice the game. Landon Stockman (2-4) picked up the win in relief for the Manatees.
The Cardinals fell behind 3-0 after one inning on Sunday and were not able to catch up. They eventually lost the game 9-1 and their lead in the East Division shrunk to just one game over idle Vero Beach. The Manatees scored three times in the first off Cardinals' starter Mark Michael (4-5). Michael settled down after that and finished with four runs allowed - three earned - in six innings of work. With the Manatees leading 4-0 in the seventh, the Cards scored their only run on a homer by Joe Mather - his eighth. The Manatees came right back in the eighth though for five more runs off Rich Scalamandre. The Cardinals managed just six hits in the game including the homer by Mather. Reid Gorecki contributed with a three-hit effort to raise his average to .297.
The Cardinals' struggles at Jackie Robinson Ballpark continued on Monday as they fell to the Daytona Cubs 3-1. The Vero Beach Dodgers lost the Brevard County Manatees on Monday also, which means the Cardinals' one-game lead in the East is still in tact with six games to play. Cardinals' starter Oscar Alvarez was touched up for his first runs allowed as a starter, and in total gave up three runs on eight hits in seven innings. Alvarez (3-1) seemed to settle in as the game went on as went unscored upon in his final four innings of work. Randy Wells (10-2) dominated the Cardinals for six innings, allowing just two hits while fanning nine. The Cardinals scored their lone run in the eighth inning as pinch-hitter John Santor hit a bullet off the base of the left field wall to score Matt Pagnozzi from third base. Santor was held to a single on the play, and the Cardinals could do no further damage.
