UIF WEEK 13 COMPLETE

Five non-division contests were on tap in Week 13 of the inaugural United Indoor Football season. Two games kicked-off on Friday, June 10, and three more highlighted Saturday, June 11. .

The Black Hills Red Dogs traveled to Tupelo on Friday, and the FireAnts prevailed in a tight contest 47-45. The Red Dogs have dropped 11 of their 12 games this season, including the last four. The FireAnts broke a three-game losing skid with the victory in their first home appearance at the BancorpSouth Center in five weeks. The Red Dogs bit first as running back Mike Scott scored on a one-yard run three-minutes into the contest. Five minutes later, Black Hills took a 14-0 lead as quarterback Frank Borba connected with wide receiver Mario Patton on a 30-yard touchdown completion. The FireAnts got on the board with four minutes left in the opening quarter as running back Buster Browne reached the end zone on a one-yard scamper. The point after attempt failed, and the Red Dogs took a 14-6 lead into the second quarter. Black Hills scored on the first play of the second frame as Borba scored on a one-yard keeper. With Black Hills leading 21-6, Tupelo wide receiver Chris Edwards scored on a one-yard run mid-way through the second quarter. Edwards ran in a two-point conversion attempt to cut the Red Dog lead to 21-14. Black Hills added three points on a 29-yard field goal from Ton Ton Luzayadio with two minutes left in the first half to give the Red Dogs a 24-14 cushion. Tupelo, however, pulled within 24-21 as quarterback Tommy Miller hit wide receiver Laquonne Holden in the end zone with 12 seconds left in the first half. The third quarter was all defense from both sides, and the only scoring of the quarter was a 25-yard field goal from John Michael Marlin to tie the game at 24-24. Tupelo took their first lead of the contest one-minute into the final quarter as Browne scored his second touchdown of the game, this time on a five-yard run. Three minutes later, the Red Dogs tied the game back up with another one-yard keeper from Borba. The Red Dogs lost quarterback Miller for a few plays on the drive, however, with a knee injury. Tupelo took the lead back again with a one-yard pass to Holden from back up quarterback Cecil Lester. Black Hills tied the game once again with a 17-yard run from Scott. Tupelo defensive back Tyson Patterson then recovered a fumble at the Red Dogs 10-yard line, and with three minutes remaining in the contest Browne scored for the third time with a one-yard run. The point-after attempt failed, and the FireAnts held onto a 44-38 advantage. Patterson also recorded the only interception of the night. Tupelo added three points on a 33-yard field goal by Marlin with 45 seconds remaining. Black Hills ended the contest with a one-yard touchdown pass from Borba to Patton. Borba was 16-25 passing for 153 yards with two touchdowns for the Red Dogs. He also scored twice on five carries. Scott reached the end zone twice on 21 carries for 90 yards for Black Hills. Black Hills' Patton recorded seven catches for 66 yards with two touchdowns. For the FireAnts, Miller was 15-25 passing for 131 yards with a touchdown. Browne rushed 10 times for 34 yards with three touchdowns for Tupelo. Holden caught seven passes for 49 yards with two touchdowns. Tupelo and Head Coach John Fourcade improved to 3-8 on the season, while Black Hills and Head Coach Dick Lemke fell to 1-11 in 2005. .

Also on Friday, the Peoria Rough Riders hosted the Sioux City Bandits in the Peoria Civic Center/Carver Arena. The Bandits used spectacular defense to defeat the Rough Riders 43-20. The Rough Riders started strong, scoring on their first three possessions to take a 17-10 lead after one quarter. But, Peoria mustered just a field goal the rest of the way as the Bandits shut down the Rough Rider offense. Peoria wide receiver Jonathan Schoonover caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Walter Church one-minute into the contest. Sioux City answered with a 34-yard field goal from kicker Cody Butler two and a half minutes later. Rough Riders running back Brandon Robinson reached the end zone on an 18-yard run with nine minutes and 31 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Sioux City running back Fred Jackson, the UIF's leader in touchdowns this season, caught a 23-yard pass from quarterback Jarrod DeGeorgia mid-way through the first quarter. Peoria kicker Matt Russell added three points with a 33-yard field goal to give the Rough Riders a 17-10 lead after 15 minutes. Three minutes into the second quarter, DeGeorgia added six points for the Bandits with a one-yard keeper. The extra point attempt failed, and the Rough Riders held onto a slim 17-16 advantage. Mid-way through the second frame, DeGeorgia connected with wide receiver Johnny Ostermeyer on a 34-yard touchdown completion to give the Bandits a 22-17 lead. Peoria scored its last points of the contest as Russell connected on a 40-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the first half to pull the Rough Riders within 22-20. DeGeorgia scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter, and the Bandits' Patrick Johnson recovered a fumble by Robinson at the Sioux City four-yard line. The Bandits took advantage of the turnover, as Jackson scored a touchdown with a 22-yard dash. The only points from either team in the forth quarter came on a 20-yard touchdown strike from DeGeorgia to Ostermeyer two minutes into the final frame. The Rough Riders turned the ball over on downs in their last three possessions of the game. DeGeorgia was 9-20 passing for 144 yards with three touchdowns. He also ran for two more touchdowns on six carries for 14 yards for Sioux City. Ostermeyer reached the end zone twice on three catches for 57 yards for the Bandits. Sioux City defensive lineman Jesse Wavrunek recorded six solo tackles, two tackle assists, and two sacks for the Bandits. Sioux City defensive back Alex Ardley also recorded eight tackles (four solo and four assists). Peoria's Church was 13-26 passing for 104 yards with one touchdown. He and the Rough Riders gained 153 yards of total offense. Robinson recorded 13 carries for 58 yards with a touchdown for the Rough Riders, while Schoonover was credited with six receptions for 54 yards with a touchdown. The Omaha Beef handed the Fort Wayne Freedom their first loss of the year with a 33-30 victory in the Omaha Civic Auditorium Saturday. A crowd of 4,823 was on hand as the Beef avenged a 42-40 loss to the Freedom in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the week before. Last week, Omaha kicker Ted Retzlaff missed two extra points. This week, however, Retzlaff connected for four field goals, including a 32-yard kick as time expired. The Freedom struck first in this contest, as running back Luther Stroder reached the end zone from one-yard out. In Huntsville, Alabama, the Ohio Valley Greyhounds jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held on for a 22-20 victory over the Tennessee Valley Raptors in the Von Braun Civic Center on Saturday. The contest was a re-match from April 23, when the Greyhounds defeated the Raptors 47-44 in Wheeling, West Virginia. The Greyhounds have won four of their last five contests. The Greyhounds scored first with a three-yard keeper by quarterback Antoine Taylor ten minutes into the game.
