
Warriors Execute Down the Stretch to Shut Down the Stars

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors (13-10) defeated the Salt Lake City Stars (6-17) 113-104 on Friday night in front of a eighteenth consecutive sellout crowd at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
The Warriors were paced by James Southerland who led all scorers with 29 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Phil Pressey contributed 20 points and 7 assists, while Kevon Looney, on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, notched a double-double with 18 points and 20 rebounds. Patrick McCaw, also on assignment from Golden State, contributed 10 points and 5 assists.
Sundiata Gaines led the Stars with 23 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Tyrone Wallace added 18 points, while Joel Bolomboy, on assignment from the Utah Jazz notched a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. L.A. Clippers assignee Diamond Stone also notched a double-double, adding 13 points and 12 rebounds for Salt Lake City.
The Warriors opened the game on a 9-2 run before the Stars responded with a 20-4 scoring run in the following five minutes of play. Neither team would miss a shot in the final 3:03 of the frame, combining for 23 total points to end the quarter.
After trailing by as many as 11 points to start the period, the Warriors would go on a 12-0 run to lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. The remainder of the quarter would see 9 more lead changes before Salt Lake City re-claimed an advantage they would carry into the break.
The Warriors would continue to trail for the entire third frame, with both teams experiencing scoring lulls. The Warriors' 35.3% team shooting effort only slightly edged the Stars' 32% field goal percentage.
The Warriors would outscore the Stars 38-24 in the final frame behind a 63.2% team shooting effort. An 11-0 run midway through the quarter swayed momentum in favor of Santa Cruz. James Southerland fueled the offense, notching 17 of his 29 points and making all five of his attempts in the frame.
