May 27, 2016 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today announced the launch of two innovative programs hosted by Stand Together, the community platform for the Timbers and Portland Thorns FC. During the summer, Stand Together will provide a Leadership Academy along with its newest program, "The Science of Soccer," offering local youth additional opportunities to engage with the game of soccer in unique ways.
Occurring on Friday, June 24, from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., the Stand Together Leadership Academy offers children ages 10-13 an inspirational day that will encourage future leaders to think creatively, live a healthy life, celebrate diversity and give back to the community through various workshops and activities hosted by local nonprofit organizations such as Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), Playworks Pacific NW, Hands on Greater Portland and many more.
Featuring a special tour of the Providence Sports Care Center, as well as lessons on environmental stewardship and anti-bullying practices, the Stand Together Leadership Academy will also provide participants with the opportunity to meet Timber Joey and hear inspirational words from a Timbers player on the importance of giving back and building community.
Following the Leadership Academy, "The Science of Soccer," an innovative partnership between Stand Together and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), will take place from Aug. 15-19, offering education, wellness and environment to youths in Portland.
"The Science of Soccer" experience is the first of its kind in MLS and will dive into the technology, engineering, art and math aspects behind the game, featuring exclusive field trips to Providence Park and the adidas Village for children in grades 4-5.
Through Stand Together, the Timbers are committed to furthering their community mission to harness the power of sport to improve the lives of children and families in the region through targeted programs, deep partnerships and philanthropic giving.
