Swarm Wrap Up Inaugural Season in Wichita

July 24, 2003 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Cincinnati Swarm News Release

The Swarm will play the last game of their first season this weekend in Wichita. The game does not hold playoff implications for the Swarm. The team was officially eliminated with the loss to Peoria last weekend, but the Swarm can still spoil Wichita's opportunity to host a wild card game.

The Swarm enter their final game with a 6-9 record. A victory on Saturday would give the Swarm a 7-9 record to close their inaugural season. In af2 circles, 7-9 is a very respectable record for an expansion team. Out of last season's 10 expansion teams, only three (Albany 13-3, Cape Fear 13-3 and Bakersfield 9-7) finished with a record better than 7-9. The Green Bay Blizzard, af2's other 2003 expansion team, enter Week 18 with a 2-13 record.

Swarm OS James Scott has an outside shot to enter the top-ten in single season receptions in af2. The tenth highest total for single season receptions is 120 by Anthony Bright of Jacksonville (2001) and Brandon Burnside of Tulsa (2000). With 12 catches on Saturday, Scott would equal Bright and Burnside and move into the top-ten.

The Stealth enter Week 18 with a playoff spot locked up. Wichita's 8-7-1 record puts them in position to host a playoff game if they can win this weekend. Stealth interim head coach Sean Ponder is 4-3 since taking over from Bob Cortese in mid-season. The Stealth offense is led by QB Anthony Buich. Buich has thrown for 3,144 yards this year.

Game time on Saturday is 8:30 p.m. eastern time. Fans who want to catch the action of the last game of the inaugural season can listen to the Swarm webcast at www.cincinnatiswarm.com.
