Surge Owner Roy Lucas, Jr., Releases Head Coach Rick Buffington from Contract
April 24, 2007 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL)
New England Surge News Release
Worcester, MA. ...Owner and President Roy Lucas Jr., of the New England Surge of the Continental Indoor Football League, (CIFL), has released Coach Rick Buffington from his Head Coaching responsibilities. Lucas will assume interim Head Coach responsibility for the remainder of the season. Coaches and Players were notified of the change prior to the decision being made.
Lucas is grateful to Buffington for all the services he offered to help organize and set up the team in the New England Surge's inaugural season. Though he respects Buffington for his many years of experience and talents, Lucas sites philosophical differences over coaching duties as the reason for ending the professional relationship with Buffington.
The Surge experienced a tough loss against the Chicago Slaughter in their second home game on Sunday. The Surge scored 15 points in the second half moving the gap to 38-35 by holding Chicago back from scoring. However, a decision to go for the win rather than overtime cost the Surge the game. New England, facing fourth and goal from the Slaughter 1-yard line, Cy Butler running back for the Surge was stopped for a loss of six yards and losing with the final score 38-35 in front of 2,079 fans at the DCU Center. New England's record of 1--3 is facing two away games, NY/NJ Revolution on Saturday April 28 and the Steubenville Stampede on May 5. They will return to Worcester with back to back home games on May 12, 19 and 26.
The practice schedule is as usual Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at The Auburn SportsPlex, Teamworks on Route 20 in Auburn from 7-10PM.
