The SeaWolves (20-33) held on for a 1-0 shutout victory over the 1st-place Akron RubberDucks on Friday night at Canal Park.

Erie's bats started off well in the first inning on Akron's Shao-Ching Chiang. Will Maddox ripped a one out double down the right field line to get into scoring position. After Ficociello was retired, Josh Lester leaked a single up the middle to bring in what became the game's only run.

Liarvis Breto looked impressive in his first AA start. The lefty fanned four in 4.1 and only surrendered two hits in a scoreless effort.

Erie manager Andrew Graham dipped into the bullpen to get Kurt Spomer on the mound in the fifth inning. The side-winding righty tossed a scoreless 2.2 innings, walked one and struck out four.

The RubberDucks scared the SeaWolves with a deep fly ball from Connor Marabell in the 8th off of John Schreiber, but outfielder Troy Montgomery reeled it in with a huge catch at the wall.

Schreiber stayed on for Erie in the ninth after the SeaWolves could not provide any more insurance. Joe Sever singled with two outs into right field, putting the tying run on base. Schreiber stayed tough, sitting down Bobby Bradley on a strikeout looking to give him his 5th save.

Spomer (1-0) picked up his first win on the season, while Chiang (5-2) fell to his second loss even after a quality start.

The SeaWolves return to Canal Park Saturday to square off with Akron. RHP Beau Burrows (5-4, 3.04 ERA) will face Akron's RHP Jake Paulson (3-1, 2.50 ERA).
