Stockton Lightning News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Lightning of the arenafootball2 league announced in conjunction with the af2 League Office that DB Mervin Brookins Jr. has been named JLS af2 Ironman of the Week (ending Jul. 12).
The honor marks the first in Brookins' af2 career and he become the fourth member of the Lightning to win a league award this season, joining Offensive Players of the Week honorees Andy Collins (Mar. 31), Chad Cavender and Justin Taplin (co-winners, May 19).
Brookins, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound rookie defensive back, was assigned to the Lightning on June 11, 2009 and made an impact on the af2 record books in just his fourth game since turning pro. Brookins intercepted five passes, tying an af2 record shared with Alvin Ray Jackson of Albany, to help the Lightning defeat Central Valley, 57-31 on July 11 and clinch their first National Conference wild card berth in team history.
In the July 11 victory, Brookins ran two of his five interceptions back for touchdowns with an end-zone to end-zone dash of 54 yards with 32 seconds left in the second quarter and a 28-yard scamper with 5:11 left in the game. He also tallied a game-high 139 all-purpose yards (48 kickoff, 91 interception) and led the Lightning with 48 kick return yards.
A product of Bethel College (NAIA) in Kansas and Sacramento (Calif.) City College, Brookins has recorded 20 tackles, six interceptions and five pass breakups in just four games as a pro this season.
