Ottawa Renegades News Release

OTTAWA – Monday, April 22, 2002 – It is with great regret that the Ottawa Renegades announce the passing of one of the former general managers of the Ottawa Rough Riders, Mr. John "Red" O'Quinn, who passed away yesterday at the age of 76. The cause of death has yet to be disclosed at this time.

An All-Eastern All-Star five times, O'Quinn set numerous pass catching records with the Montreal Alouettes, despite the fact that statistical records were not available for the 1952 and 1953 seasons. In the six seasons in which records were kept while he played, he averaged 62.8 receptions per year. From 1954 through 1959, the future Hall of Famer caught 377 passes for 5,679 yards and 24 TDs. He still holds the Grey Cup records of 13 receptions and 316 yards – single game marks – established in a 26-25 Alouettes loss to the Edmonton Eskimos on November 27, 1954. The Wake Forest grad also played for the National Football League's Chicago Bears (1950 and 1951) and Philadelphia Eagles (1951). Mr. O'Quinn later became the general manager of the Ottawa Rough Riders, serving from 1962 to 1969, as well as the 1970 and 1971 Alouettes. He helped bring the city of Ottawa two Grey Cup titles (1968 and 1969) in three championship appearances, falling just short in 1966, before earning his final Cup ring in 1970.

Mr. O'Quinn was enshrined in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame on January 6, 1981.
