Evansville BlueCats News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats came up short against the Rock River Raptors by a score of 49-16 last Saturday night at Roberts Stadium. The BlueCats were coming off a road victory against the Bloomington Extreme the week before but couldn't put it all together again against the Raptors. The BlueCats miscues hurt their efforts as the Raptors started to pull away, as the BlueCats fumbled 7 times (lost 3) and were called for 8 penalties. The win moves the Raptors to (7-4) on the season as they sit in a tie for first place in the UIF Eastern Conference. The loss drops the BlueCats to (3-7).
The BlueCats jumped out on top early in the game after reigning UIF Defensive Player of the Week AJ Bryant forced a Raptors fumble on the first possession of the game. Linebacker John Winchester scooped up the ball and nearly ran it in for the score. The BlueCats took advantage of the turnover with a Ray Kirkley touchdown run two plays later. The extra point attempt was blocked.
BlueCats defensive back Hunter Pingston intercepted Raptors quarterback Ben Sankey on the next possession but the offense was unable to take advantage, going 3 and out and missing the long field goal attempt. The BlueCats defense held Rock River to just 3 field goal attempts on their next 3 possessions, before Ray Kirkley broke loose on a 17-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to put the BlueCats on top 13-9. The Raptors finished up the first half with two touchdowns of their own to take a 23-13 lead at the half and pulled away in the second half with two touchdowns and four field goals for a final score of 49-16.
Ray Kirkley finished the game with 31 yards rushing and 44 all-purpose yards. He scored both of the BlueCats touchdowns.
Raptors kicker Doug Daniel was phenomenal, making every kick he attempted in the game. His perfect kicking night included 7 field goals and 4 extra points, including one field goal from 46 yards, a new Roberts Stadium record.
The BlueCats defense was led by linebacker John Winchester who made 8 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. He also recovered a fumble. Deion Holts made 5.5 tackles in the game including 1.5 tackles for loss. Defensive back Hunter Pingston had 4 tackles in the game and two interceptions. Defensive tackle Johnny Brown had 3.5 tackles in the game, 3 of them were tackles for a loss with one sack. Tez Morris added 5 tackles to the defensive effort.
