Mayors Agree to American Bowl "Challenge"

Rome Mayor Ronnie Wallace and Canton Mayor Janet Creighton have agreed to a friendly challenge exchange on behalf of their communities in support of the Rome Renegades and Canton Legends. The teams square off Monday night in The Forum in Rome for the American Indoor Football League championship.

Mayor Wallace's challenge to Mayor Creighton, Wallace said "each of us represents vibrant communities and as such, the interest in this game is huge. We are willing to provide you a sampling of items from our community from food and crafts, and I will agree to wear one of your teams tee shirts and cap if, in fact, your Canton Legends are victorious. You will reciprocate when our Renegades emerge victorious in the Championship Game July 3". Mayor Creighton in her response said "You're on ! I will look forward to receiving your basket and I will be sure to send you the Legends' hat and shirt by priority mail !"

The Rome Renegades (14-2) are riding a 13 games home winning streak while Canton (12-4) comes into the Forum with a seven game winning string.

Rome is led by Quarterback Bo Bartik who took over at mid season after All AIFL Southern Division QB Marcus Brady who joined the Montral Alouettes. Bartik throws to record setting wide receiver Gerald Gales, Andrew Amerson and T.J. Anderson. Lew Thomas leads the Rome ground game and kicker Danny Marshall set an AIFL record last week in the semi-finals with 21 kicking points.

Canton rides the strong arm of veteran Quarterback Kevin Mason who joined the Legends at mid-sseason. He throws to Christopher Archie and Randall Knapp, Tim Smith while Doug Schwaberow leads the Canton ground game.

Both teams boast stout defenses, Rome led by the defensive secondary called the 'Pick Pack' Jermaine Collins, Charles Jones and Russell Green. Canton's 'D' is anchored by linebacker Rashan Hall, defensive back Jo Jo Polk and kicker J. R. Cipra..

Both teams, along with league officials, will be guests of honor at a banquet Sunday afternoon at the Coosa Country Club. Kick-off Monday night is at 7:00 Rome Radio station Q-102 will broadcast the games locally while the AIFL will web cast the game.
