
LumberKings Announce 2018 Opening Day Roster

Clinton, IA - The Seattle Mariners have assigned 25 players to the active roster of the Class A Clinton LumberKings and manager Denny Hocking to open the 2018 season. Hocking, 47, a 13-year Major League Veteran, will lead a team that features top prospect Oliver Jaskie and fan favorite Dimas Ojeda.
Jaskie, 22, was taken by the Mariners in the 6th round of the 2017 Frist-Year Player Draft out of the University of Michigan where he was teammates with 2017 LumberKing Johnny Slater. The lefty is currently rated as the No. 21 prospect in the Mariner's organization according to Baseball America.
Ojeda, 22, returns to Clinton for his second Opening Day and spent his entire season with the LumberKings. During his time in Clinton, Ojeda was a regular at LumberKings community outings earning him the Seattle Mariners 2017 Dan Wilson Community Service Award. Over 106 games in Clinton last season, Ojeda batted .248 with four home runs and 35 RBI.
Other prospects assigned to Clinton include infielders Joseph Rosa and Johnny Adams. Rosa played his final four games of the 2017 season for the LumberKings before an injury ended his season early. Baseball America labels him as the Mariner's No. 28 prospect. Adams began his professional career in 2017 in Everett with the Short-Season Aquasox. He batted .316 in 52 games with five home runs and 37 RBI. Baseball America currently lists him No. 28 in the Mariner's system.
Tommy Romero will open the season, as another top prospect in the LumberKings starting rotation. The right-hander went 5-1 for the Aquasox with a 2.08 ERA over 13 appearances, two starts, and is marked as the No. 26 prospect in the Mariners system according to Baseball America.
Overall the LumberKings return nine players who spent time in Clinton last season. Lefty Nick Wells returns to Clinton for his third season and was one of two LumberKings to remain in the starting rotation from Opening Day until the end of the season. Ryne Inman will join Wells in the starting rotation. The Georgia native ended his season in Clinton making his final eight appearances as a starter.
2016 Coastal Carolina Chanticleer, and College World Series Champion, Billy Cooke joins other returners Matt Clancy (left-handed reliever), Ryan Scott (catcher), Nick Thurman (catcher), and Louis Boyd (Infielder).
Seattle's 2017 draft class is well-represented on the LumberKings 2018 Opening Day roster with 12 Mariner picks assigned to Clinton. Pitchers Chris Castellanos (33rd round), Clay Chandler (13th round), Sam Delaplane (23rd round), David Gerber (29th round), Austin Hutchinson (26th round), Jaskie Oliver (sixth round), Collin Kober (27th round), and Thomas Romero (15th round) will be in Clinton. Infielders Johnny Adams (22nd round), Louis Boyd (24th round), and Ryan Costello (31st round) will join outfielder Billy Cooke (8th round) in opening the season in Clinton.
