Kissimmee Kreatures News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. â It's the midway point in the season and the Kissimmee Kreatures continue to make roster changes.
Head coach Marquette Smith is not pleased with the 2-5 record of his team, so this week he is bringing in seven players. They will be available when the Kreatures travel west on I-4 to meet Lakeland, Sunday, in the "Mother's Day Special Game" which starts at 4 p.m.
"We've had good linebacker play, but we are hurting on the defensive line," Smith said. "The secondary also needs some improvement."
Smith started last week with the addition of Lorenzo Guess, who played four years at Michigan State, at strong safety. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Guess made his debut against the Wyoming Cavalry.
The newcomers include linemen Roger Williams (6-4, 300) who lives in Bartow, Florida, and Chris Parks (6-2, 250) out of Delta State who lives in Miami Lakes.
"Williams has some quickness and Parks can also play linebacker," said Smith.
The defensive backs are Bishlar Penson (5-11, 190) and Harold Jacobs (5-10, 185) from Miami who played at the University of Minnesota.
Now that James Panui is hurt and regular kicker Jeff Bacigalupi is still out with an injury, Smith needed to find a kicker. He will bring in former Rhodes College booter Matt Fields (6-4, 190) who was in the Kissimmee preseason camp.
Eric Plant, a wide receiver, out of Philadelphia, will add to the loss of Panui. The 5-11, 185-pound Plant was an all-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association performer out of Virginia State. He recently left an indoor team in Peoria where he had two catches, one for a touchdown, in four games.
Smith said he also is adding quarterback Damian Yates (6-2, 205). "He can run around and give us a new dimension," Smith said. "A mobile quarterback like he is, can make time and not necessarily stay in the pocket."
Yates played for his hometown Miami Bulls in the semi-pro Southe Florida League.
The other new player is Damian Francis, a two-way player (WR/DB) who is 5-9, 190.
"I think this group will benefit us tremendously going into the weekend game," said Smith of the Kreatures 4 p.m. game Sunday in the âMother's Day Special" against the Lakeland ThunderBolts.
