(Stockton, CA)—The Stockton Ports Baseball Club and Oakland A's are seeking families to host Ports players in their homes for the 2005 Minor League season from April through September.

Trevor Fawcett, Stockton Ports Assistant General Manager, said, "The program is similar to hosting exchange students. The host family essentially becomes the players' family during a summer of baseball."

June Cook, Ports long-time season ticket holder, has been a host. Cook said, "I have hosted several Ports players and enjoyed every one. Also, if you know someone on the team, the game becomes even more exciting." Over the years, Cook has kept in touch with several of the players, making long-lasting baseball friends.

Last season, the Rangers' Jason Andrew made his major league debut while being hosted by the Norm Knodt family.

Fawcett explained the importance of the host family program, "For many of the players, it is their first time away from home; and for others, it will be their first time in California and the San Joaquin Valley. The host families make that transition easier for the players."

Fawcett said that prospective hosts are asked to fill out a simple questionnaire to assist the Ports in placing a player. Host families are provided with a package of tips with topics like "What does a typical minor league player look like?" "Ball players do get days off." "Real Life Situations and Solutions." And, "Helpful Guidelines." Players and families have an opportunity to meet before arrangements are final.

Special events are held throughout the season for the host families and their players.

Prospective Host Families are invited to call the Ports office at (209) 644-1900 to learn more about the program and how to apply.
